26yr. Female w/DD

Does anyone know anyone near my age with Dupuytren's? Will insurance cover something that's known to be a genetic disease? Most people won't cover pre-existing conditions. Any help from those similar in age and gender, personal or near personal experiences are most appreciated.

Thank you,
Sarah

Re: 26yr. Female w/DD

Hi Sarah

Welcome to the forum.

There have been discussions on here in the past from quite young people, including children, with either DD or LD. See as one example this thread http://www.dupuytren-online.info/Forum_E...ople-0_186.html, and by using search you might find others. I know of one person in their 20's who had quite severe and disabling LD, now fit and active after having RT.

What led up to your diagnosis? I guess most of us have it quite young, but the predisposing factors to awaken it into its symptomatic state does not occur for most until we're older. I don't know how insurance companies handle it in the US, but lots of people on here report cover for RT, Xiaflex and surgery. My advice is avoid or change any life factors that may be relevant, there may be none, look after your hands as much as possible, but try not to let it interfere with what you want to achieve.

Best wishes
SB

I don't think you will have any insurance problems, at least not from a "pre-existing" standpoint. And the genetic component won't impact insurance coverage.

Re: 26yr. Female w/DD

Hi Sarah, I once was 26 with dupuytren's, now I'm a 33 yr old female with dupuytren's. I was 31 before I knew what my issues where called and had 2 surgeries last year. The disease just keeps coming back, cords reforming at 8 weeks post-op. In Canada I have had zero issues with coverage. I've seen 3 specialists and consulted with a radiation oncologist with full coverage.
I'm told this is a genetic disease but I have no family history, go figure!
Good luck!!

Thank you SB,
It seems more real the more I research this. I was working as an orchard manager picking fruit using clippers and pruning trees, etc. lve heard over usage of your hands can accelerate DD; do you know if this is true? I was also doing crossfit and though originally that the first one to form on my right hand was a callus. After a few weeks it didn't go away and grew in size. When it started showing up on my left hand, with such intense pain radiating through my hand and dark coloring, I knew I should go to the doctor. I first went to a GP, referred then to a radiologist, and finally to a hand surgeon / specialist. I was scheduled for surgery in NZ because I had insurance and the price compared to the US was good. But I just had a feeling that once I got cut into, there was no going back. I'm trying not to let it have too much of a negative change to my life. I don't know if I'll be able to continue school for dental hygiene. "m just praying for no pain and a healing if God's willing!

l'm looking into RT and Needle Aponeurotomy right now so we'll see how that all pans out. Thanks heaps for your reply!

I know what the heck right! I'm not a smoker, drinker, not diabetic, and no family history. Do you feel like after surgery it came on more aggressively?

Re: 26yr. Female w/DD

Anything I do makes it worse, but doing nothing also made it worse. The 8 weeks I had before the disease started growing back was the best and I wish I could make that 8 weeks last a lifetime!
