4 weeks after surgery concerned about wound

Hi all

I had my operation 8 June, and now the ski on either side of the surgery has turned opaque and lifting away from my hand. Also, some parts of the surgery haven't knit (the wound is open in small places - the flesh beneath seems dry - no infection).

Also, the operation is on my little finger, and it seems to be setting with a gap between my little finger and ring finger.

(I came on holiday a week ago, and don't have access to my surgeon - hoping you guys can give me some advice).

Thank you for reading.

Re: 4 weeks after surgery concerned about wound

Welcome to the forum Debs

Maybe you can see a nurse, even whilst on holiday? It's hard to tell from your description what's going on or if there is really a problem . I would worry about infection if there are open areas. Were you advised about aftercare, moisturiser or oils, to minimise, reduce and soften the inevitable scar? Also were you given some exercises to do?

Best wishes

SB

Re: 4 weeks after surgery concerned about wound

Hi SB

Thanks for responding so quickly.

I have a friend who is a nurse and sent her some photos of the wound. Fortunately, there isn't any sign of infection, so apart from it being a really ugly wound, it seems ok.

I was not given any post-op advice at all. (My surgeon went on leave before I had the sutures out). After lots of recent research, I got some Vitamin E cream yesterday which I've started applying.

I just wish the pain would ease. My little finger hurts constantly. Is this normal?

Re: 4 weeks after surgery concerned about wound

My best suggestion is to keep the wound moist 24/7. That was a parting piece of advice given to me by my surgeon and I'm sure it made a huge difference in my recovery. He said to never let the wound dry. Do your exercises/flexing but not to the point of disrupting the wound. No need for pain. I used Aveeno lotion.

Thanks for your response, Callie. I wasn't given any exercises - can you give me some? And about the wound - did you keep a dressing on, and if so, for how long?

Re: 4 weeks after surgery concerned about wound

Hi I've had many surgeries. Important -keep the hand elevated ie rest your hand on the shoulder. Flex the fingers as though playing the piano as this keeps the circulation going and reduces the swelling. Gently make a fist many time a day. Keep up the moisturiser. First thing of a morning flex the hand in the wash basin using very warm water. Dry the area and apply the moisturiser. You can cover the hand using hydrofix or similar, which protects and still allows the air into the area . Regards

Re: 4 weeks after surgery concerned about wound

The exercises I did were mostly flexing throughout the day. I would put pressure on the scar tissue but not to the point of pain. I would massage the wound a few times a day with the Aveeno lotion. Also, spend some time trying to make a fist.
