After surgery question

I had surgery on both hands. My right hand feels fine. I have pain in my left hand. It feels like a long swollen cord in the middle of my hand under where the incision was. It feels the same as it was before the surgery. A hard lump.
Is this normal? If so, how long does it generally take for swelling to go away?

Re: After surgery question

I'm no expert but have had surgery. This is likely scar tissue. I'd check with doc or get second opinion. Will feel similar to lay person but they aren't.
Hope things get better!

Re: After surgery question

In my case 8 weeks post surgery it was recurrence and some extension of the dupuytren's, not scar tissue. The thick cord indeed was a dupuytren's cord.

Re: After surgery question

I had a swollen area which was healing scar tissue post surgery. It was like that for about eight weeks. I massaged the area continually with Aveeno lotion. The swelling went down and there is none remaining. It has been more than 12 years since surgery and the hand has zero contraction and no noticeable signs of Dupuytren's.

Re: After surgery question

Doctor says it's normal scar tissue.

Does scar tissue really develop under the skin? I always thought it was on top.

Re: After surgery question

Scar is external. Scar tissue under skin. Massive lung surgery 19 yrs ago and scar tissue in lungs etc. In hands, will feel like DD nodule but likely isn't (as said in my earlier answer). It should not hurt like many of our nodules do. Some have good luck with oils and massage in breaking up scar tissue. I haven't. Just the mark of zorro and deep scar tissue. YMMV

Sorry surgery wasn't curative for the other person above. Mine wasn't either but new nodules formed next door to old one and not in same place.

For me, this disease has a vengeance. If I try to knock it down, it makes it angrier! Best of luck to all in this thread.

Re: After surgery question

Are you in physical therapy? I had surgery last fall and one thing that was done to work on the scarring was ultrasound. It will soften the tissues and break up scar tissue. If you are in PT/OT, that might be something to ask about.

Re: After surgery question

No I'm not in PT. The incision was small in the hand I'm having issues with. The top of the incision is fine, but towards the bottom is hurts and extends about a half an inch below it. It feels like a swollen tendon the entire length of my palm. This was here before the surgery. I thought the swollen tendon was Dupuytren's. So either it wasn't, or it wasn't removed correctly.

Re: After surgery question

Hi , some of my scar tissue is "white and lumpy" , primarily where the swelling is worse ( feels like rolled up cardboard under the skin ) . Other areas where the swelling is less, there is less scarring . I was told that unfortunatly some people "lay down" more scarring tissue than others .

Re: After surgery question

I am 6 weeks post op and I also have swollen lumps in same areas where I had nodules that were scraped off and the reason I don't think they are dupuytrens is that I feel like I can move them a little by pushing on them and milking them towards my wrist. I also put my other thumb on them and make little circular motions to loosen them up and flatten them out. They feel like they move even though they return a while later, like an accumulation of thick fluid or putty or something. The dupuytrens I had before, I could not get to move, it was hard like celery, in fact when I had the NA a year ago, it made a sound like cutting into celery.
