Ambidextrous DD

Hi All

I am a new member and have DD in various stages in both hands. Right hand little finger is 90 to 100 degrees so well advanced and was probably caused by tearing the tendon when I was young during waterskiing, it later developed (30 yrs later) when I stressed it doing a valve regrind job, wooden rod with a suction cup for hours.

I had thought that DD was not stress related and also see some web sites say rubbing the affected area with a rod to stress it can help. It seems to me the rod I used actually caused it to get worse.

My left hand 3rd finger has just started with a swelling and is trying to pull just the tip inwards and is not on the palm? Is it DD or something else. It also seemed to be caused by stress as I felt a pain in that part one day while climbing a rope. Now 4 or 5 years later the bump grows and it has just started to go to 1 or 2 degrees on the tip.

Left thumb has just started a nodule on the palm.

Some say stretching can help - any comments.

Others say pressure (rolling a rod) helps - not convinced but open to help here.

Looks like my options are limited as I am based in Fiji for several years and so treatment may be a long way away.

Look forward to your comments

Best

Devin

Re: Ambidextrous DD

Devin,

1) You said, " ...... probably caused by tearing the tendon when I was young during waterskiing, it later developed (30 yrs later) when I stressed it doing a valve regrind job, wooden rod with a suction cup for hours."

That may, or may not have been the cause. The cord in Dupuytren's should not be confused as a tendon. It is two different structures.

2) You said, "I had thought that DD was not stress related and also see some web sites say rubbing the affected area with a rod to stress it can help."

Many feel that stress beyond normal activities can stimulate the growth of Dupuytren's if a person has the genetic disposition.

3) You said, "My left hand 3rd finger has just started with a swelling and is trying to pull just the tip inwards and is not on the palm? Is it DD or something else. It also seemed to be caused by stress as I felt a pain in that part one day while climbing a rope. Now 4 or 5 years later the bump grows and it has just started to go to 1 or 2 degrees on the tip."

That sounds like a tendon problem and not Dupuytren's, but that is a guess.

4) You said, "Left thumb has just started a nodule on the palm."

Think about RT as soon as possible. Might not be available for you.

5) You said, "Some say stretching can help - any comments."

Stretching is not helpful in my opinion and may make the problem worse.

Good luck.

Re: Ambidextrous DD

Thanks Callie

I am not sure yet of the correct terminology as I have just started serious research. Basically I had a nudule in my right hand for 30 years and it progressed to a DD contraction after the valve grinding.

The 3rd on the left is a hard lump and on the middle part of the finger, I will call it base, middle and tip till I get the proper words. Running out to the tip is the same tense and discoloured part like the other more pronounced 4th.

So if this may not be DD what could it be?

As for the thumb - you reckon RT would slow it down or fix it, that is if it is available here. Will have to investigate.

Been looking at the long running thread for Oz NA work and that is interesting as that is quite close.

Thanks for the input.

Best

Re: Ambidextrous DD

If you can get NA for cords and contracture, I recommend it. It is a simple procedure. The provider should be a certified hand specialist/surgeon. Radiation sounds like it would be beneficial for the tissue in the nodule stage.
