Any artists ?

Hi there,

and thanks for this Forum.

I have this DP mainly in my right hand, but also left hand is affected. Very strange as I am a woman, no one in previous generations did have it as far as we know, no other signs except a trauma on my right hand in 2012 (first noodle 6 months later). It started to be very aggressive June 2015. I had radiation on my right hand 4 weeks ago in August, but it seems to me that now, 4 weeks later, it is very active in both thumbs (although diagnosed with DD, thumbs were not radiated). They are hurting quite a lot.

It makes me very sad to feel kind of a loss of strength, pain and tension in my hands. I am still at level N (left hand) and N/I (right, pinky affected in less then 4 weeks...), but reading and seeing what future might bring breaks my heart. Also, I do not have any good doctors nearby, I always will have to travel to France or Germany in order to get some minimal-invasive treatments like NA.

As I am an artist, I wonder if there are any other artists here to tell me if you stopped working. I do not dare to use any pincers or scissors right now, even opening a bottle of colours is hurting and stressing.

I feel like being very punished by nature and do not know how to go on without arts and creation or hands even in daily life.

So my questions are:
1) Did anybody stop working in general because of having DD?
2) Did anybody have to give up arts and crafting?
3) Which activities should be avoided in order to not trigger too much this situation?

And
4) Is it normal that DD just moves to another area after radiation? Or was it an error to not radiate also thumbs? (I asked but was told that they still have enough flexibility... now I wonder how long...). I should have the second radiation in November.

Thanks, all the best
Dalila

Re: Any artists ?

Hi Dalila

There have been artists and musicians using the forum in the past. A search will find some posts. There is a story from Anna an artist on the personal pages http://www.dupuytren-online.info/downloa...ecting_hand.htm.

I play piano, have had RT and now protect my hands when doing DIY and chores and sport. I practise a lot but a little at any one time, and find this helps. Other than this, I carry on as usual and try to ignore it, but piano does mean you immediately notice any loss of dexterity in the hands.

RT often results in short term irritation or aggravation of the DD symptoms so this might settle down. My thumbs were not irradiated either, but I had aggravated symptoms for nearly 18 months after, that convinced me at the time RT had not been effective. This long period of irritation is not typical.

Best wishes
SB

I never stopped doing anything I loved to do. Even when my pinky was frozen at 180'. I never stopped drawing, painting, gardening, floral arranging to training horses.
I just learned how to do everything differently. And not expect perfection. My expectations have changed according to my abilitity. It meant using tools differently, finding things that help make the task easier etc. sometimes I need a little help and I'm not afraid to ask! Received a Rumba vacuum as a gift, and found easier ways to clean the house. Lots of cool cleaning products today.
Always protect my hands with padding and gloves and wear special shoes and inserts to protect my feet. It just takes time to learn new limitations & how to do what you need to do differently without causing more damage to the hands and feet.
There are common sense things we have to adjust to and many things we can't do depend on many variables. Everyone is different.
Kind Regards
Cherise
