Cost of xiaflex

My insurance co was billed for 90 units for the injection equalling $10,000 +. I received only one injection. Everything I have read says this med should have been around $3000 and an amount of medication measured in in mL. I have now questioned this twice. Any ideas what the problem could be?

What did your doctor's office say about this? That doesn't sound right. I had Xiaflex two years ago and they used one vial of medication. The cost for that vial was around $3,400 (don't remember exactly).

Re: Cost of xiaflex

So, this is the amount they charged Blue Cross. $6554.00 for .58 injected and $3616.00 for the .42 they waste. My co pay is 80%, leaving me to pay 2038.72. Then, I can apply to the company that makes Xiaflex for reimbursement for an extra $1000. This billing amount is using Medicare guidelines. I am not on Medicare. Thanks for responding. How were your results and has the stuff reoccurred. Do you sleep with a splint.

Wow, that still seems way too high. My entire vial was only the $3,400. My insurance covered it at 100%. $10,000 is crazy!

Xiaflex did straighten my finger - ring finger on my right hand. But within six months, the other fingers on that hand contracted terribly. I had open surgery this past fall and that surgery failed and now all the fingers on my right hand have curled in. I just have a very aggressive disease and when you mess with it by using surgical procedures, it flares it up. No easy solutions for me, I'm afraid. I used splints at night on both hands for several years. I can't wear them now because my fingers are too curled.

I hope you have great results with the Xiaflex and that it has a long lasting affect.

Re: Cost of xiaflex

Thank you, Dawn. I have had surgery on both my hands. When my right ring finger curled again, I tried Xiaflex. I too have very aggressive disease. My reaction to xiaflex left my arm completely bruised with a vessel protruding in my armpit. Still had swelling and bruising 8 weeks later. Powerful stuff. I still have more areas of disease, I don't think I am having any more injection.

Oh yeah! My arm turned purple from my fingers up into my armpit. My lymph nodes in my elbow and armpit were incredibly swollen and painful for weeks. I realized quickly how powerful that medication was and decided I wouldn't have any more either. It made me a bit uneasy, especially given how it is relatively new to the market.
