Could hand trauma trigger Dupuytren's?

Hello,
I am 52 years old, female, and was diagnosed with Dupuytren’s 3 years ago by a hand surgeon. Two years earlier I had had Carpal Tunnel surgery on that same hand. As the CT incision healed, my middle finger became stiff, painful, and a little thick, while the other fingers returned to normal. I went back to the surgeon about the middle finger, and that is when he diagnosed it as DC.
Today, 3 years later, the finger still extends almost fully, but I cannot make it into a fist. At times, if I’m not careful, it will snap shut, which is quite painful. It is still a little thicker than my other fingers. There is also occasionally sharp pain in my palm.
Recently, I also found nodes on the bottoms of both my feet.
The pain is why I joined this forum. Although I am not a my wits end yet, I have found that when I do feel pain, heat seems to help.
I haven’t read anything about DC being triggered by a trauma such as CT surgery. Has anyone heard of that before?
Thank you.

Re: Could hand trauma trigger Dupuytren's?

Hi TJ, welcome to our forum!

To answer your question in the title of this thread: yes, hand trauma can well trigger Duputyren's. That's not unusual and you might have a look at http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytr...ideeffects.html and http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytr...ure_trauma.html.

The symptoms that you are describing actually don't seem to be Dupuytren disease. If you have Dupuytren's contracture you usually can make a fist but not straighten your affected finger. What you are describing sounds more like trigger finger. Yet trigger finger can have a variety of causes and one of them may be Dupuytren disease if the the Dupuytren nodule is close to a tendon and presses on it. Only a doctor can really diagnose your hand and determine what the root cause of your problems is. If you are already being treated by a good doctor, I would follow his advice, but of course you might also look for a second opinion.

To add to wach's answer, lots of people report their DD occurred for the first time or flared up after CT surgery, any surgery actually of the hand, arm, including that done for DD, and even a flare after having the collagenase injection.

Thank you both for your responses and information.
I have often wondered if it was trigger finger, as my symptoms didn’t quite fit Dupuytren’s. The nodes in my feet though suggested I was susceptible to Dupuytren’s, (in my limited knowledge). As you mentioned, a second opinion may be in order here, or at least a re-evaluation. Thanks again.

Yes it can. I broke my wrist and it triggered mine. It's likely I would have gotten it later in life but the wrist break triggered it earlier. I'm also guessing it made it worse.
