experiene with anti vibration gloves?

Twice a year my terrace needs to be cleaned with a pressure washer. I have done this for the past 20 years and only receently realised that the extensive vibration over several hours may have contributed to the development of my DD. So this year I am hesitant to repeat it There's a large offer of gloves supposed to reduce vibration, but I have read that they aren't effective in reducing the vibration from most work tools. Who has experience with anti vibration gloves and their effectiveness in really reducing the transmission of vibrations to the hands, or some hard data?

Re: experiene with anti vibration gloves?

Hi Stefan,

vibration once a year may possibly contribute to the development of Dupuytren's but probably not significantly. Studies showing the effect of vibration, like the French GAZEL study http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3913034/, usually refer to workers who have been exposed to vibration on a daily basis, all day and for years ("over 15 years of manipulating a vibrating tool at work"). I don't think an hour per year would have any measurable effect.

Re: experiene with anti vibration gloves?

When I do a physical activity that requires gripping something for a long period of time I will have spasms later in my hand. That includes using a pressure washer where I need to hold the release handle in the entire time, painting with a brush, hammering, etc. and the problem is that the Dupuytrens affects the recovery from such activities. The ironic aspect is that I have always had above average hand strength and I have to wonder if the genetics that provided this also provided a basis for developing Dupuytrens later in life.

I now try to hire people to do tasks that involve extensive and prolonged use of my hands for a period of hours. I do more supervising than hands on work. If I do find myself abusing my hands in some manner than I use an ice pack which seems to help with the spasms in my hands afterwards.

The Dupuytrens is the worst in my primary hand and I have made an effort in recent years to use my other hand even if it is awkward or the task requires more time. It does help.
