My names Liam, I'm 24 and from the UK. I'm sorry if this seems like a silly question but I'm struggling to find answers online. Around 9-12 months back I noticed modules forming on my palm under my ring finger on both hands. My job at the time was more manual labour oriented. Upon doing some research online I decided it was best to go to the doctors in which I was sent to have an ultrasound on my hands. The result of this was that I had fibromas on my hands. The doctor then told me that if it gets worse or more painful to let them know and they would book me an appointment with the hand surgeon to get them removed. So I'm basically wondering is a fibroma essentially dupuytrens or are they completely different? I was feeling less worried after hearing that from my doctor but recently my Grandad was diagnosed with dupuytrens which has now got me thinking.

This is a difficult question to answer for individual cases using an online forum. There can be several different reasons for lumps in the hand, including DD nodules, ganglion cysts, lipomas and non DD fibromas, small cancer tumours, other nodular conditions that may affect tendons or other structures of the hand. I wonder if you have other indications that it may be DD such as Garrods pads or signs of the lumps forming a cord, or indications it is not DD such as the location, depth and texture of the lumps or other symptoms elsewhere. Maybe not to a laypersons eye but these are some things to look out for. I would ask your hand doctor for the reasons they have diagnosed non DD fibromas, the differential diagnosis, an doctor with experience of these conditions should be able to explain although it may be something based on experience.
