For Wach on splinting

Just watched Wach's video on benefits of splinting. First thing I noticed at how functional his hands look. After closer inspection, I can see that his one pinky looks contracted.

I'm very curious about the stiffness that developed after 13 months. Wach, did you try to do various exercises to try to loosen up? I'm curious if the stiffness went away after stopping splinting (along with re-contracture). I wonder also if splinting just gets to be extremely annoying after a while.

Re: For Wach on splinting

It's not annoying to me to wear a splint because I waited 2 years after surgery had pinky finger totally closed. And all four fingers flared. The hand surgeon just looked at my hand after months of therapy and splinting as my fingers continued to worsen. He said he did all he could do,then spinned around and left the exam room . Did not give me any referrals nada.
I researched on the Internet and found Xiaflex, and a DD specialist. That injection finally opened my fingers and eradicated all the scar tissue from surgery.

I wear a FIXXGLOVE nightly, spring splint and silver ring splints for DD daily. It's really miserable to have a finger that is bent to the fist, and my DD specialist said I must wear a night splint forever to prevent the fingers from contracting at sleep. Yeah for awhile it was stiff in the mornings after almost 8 months since Xiaflex injections the fingers are now adjusted. My splint is not totally straight the fix glove has a bendable aluminum splint that I have adjusted to a slight bend, to prevent stiffness & morning pain.

Hope you find what works for you.

Re: For Wach on splinting

Of course, I made exercises and the hand was not really stiff in that sense that I couldn't use it anymore. But I had the feeling that the splinted joints eventually got a little stiffer, not just in the morning. That's just subjective feeling, no measurement. After I stopped splinting my hand became normal again. I didn't experience splinting as extremely annoying but of course a little inconvenient. Some people have been wearing splints for years.

Re: For Wach on splinting

In your video, you talked about someone who wore the splint for 3 years. Anyone longer than that? Has anyone ever tried to wear a splint at the first sign of contraction, where they still pass the table top test, to prevent contraction?

I'm still at stage N and am going through RT, but want to thoroughly understand my options, should the disease progress.

Re: For Wach on splinting

although I have shared this in the past ..it may still be helpful briefly :

NA pinkie nodule and severe contracture ..NA 2009 have worn Cert. hand theropist designed splint every night ,,,not a big deal
have splint replaced each year ...

NA 2011 other hand middle finger contracture 60 % approx.. spint same as above every night

thats right I sleep with splints on both hands each night ...fingers are still very near perfect ....
wearing the splints is no big deal to me ... I also refrain from doing things that pull on my hands or fingers...wear gloves when driving ...mowing etc...

I will stick with the above plan ..because it works for me

PS my issue was the PIP joints ..

I am a lucky guy ....Dr. Eaton worked a miracle on me ...

Re: For Wach on splinting

What caused you to wear splints for so long? A recommendation or your own idea? Any indications they would contract without the splints? Are the splints for just the fingers or the whole hand? Do you have any disease affecting other fingers in any way?

Re: For Wach on splinting

never told to wear the splints that long ... cannot recall how long dr. Eaton said to wear them but it certainly was not a very long period of time ...i do know that ..
I have continued to wear them .. just because it works ....no other reason ...as you may know Dupys normally returns after NA

so far so good ...hand curl up when we are sleeping so splints makes sense to me ...

But as luck would have it after all these years ..just last night I discovered a a small nodule in my left palm ..so I took photos
to monitor progression ..if and when it happens UGH ! I do know that Dr. Eaton injected steroid into nodules when i had NA ..and the injection really shrank and dissolved the nodules ...so maybe i will consider getting a steroid injection at some point ..and hope I do not get contraction of a finger ...

this disease as most folks know ...is kind of a roll the dice guessing game

Sure miss Dr. Eaton .... he was the best ..a class guy ! Everyday I keeping hoping to hear that he will go back into practice ..

Re: For Wach on splinting

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping the RT I'm going through will keep the disease in check.

Interesting about the steroid injection. I'm wondering if hitting it really quick might be the best thing to do?? You might check the survey on various DD treatments. I recall steroid injection yielded comparatively low satisfaction ratings.
