Hand Surgeon in Florida?

My Dupuytren's has progressed to the point that I am considering surgery on my right hand. I had NA done about this time last year and it was great, at first, but didn't last. I am no longer a candidate for NA and was advised to have surgery. I'm very nervous about finding an experienced hand surgeon in Florida. I would appreciate any advise on how to go about exploring my options. Thanks!

Suzie, There is a great group Dupuytrens Contracture on Facebook. Often there are recommendations in that group. I looked up in the files and found several names in FL for you. Not sure how close to you.
Steven Helgemo & Ivan Olarte-Port Charlotte; Douglas Carlan-St Petersburg; Angelo Incorvaia-Boynton Beach; Thomas Saylor-North Palm Beach & Stuart Patterson-Lakeland. Hope this helps!

Re: Hand Surgeon in Florida?

If you look under the NA treatment page on the website, there are quite a few practitioners listed there in Florida (who are hand surgeons), and may be a good starting point. http://www.dupuytren-online.info/NA_list_North_America.html

Hello, I read about ur experiences with NA. that didn't work for me either after surgery caused a huge flare with all my fingers. The hand surgeon dr just blew me off by saying well that sometimes happens with DD. and left me no alternatives then left the exam room. BYE!

In my case I had only one pinky finger slightly curved before the surgery, I was told I had severe arthritis called Dupuytrens contracture and required surgery. After surgery all the fingers had began to curvature. The pinky finger that had the surgery contracted to a 180' closed to my palm less than 6 months after surgery.

I read about a hand surgeon familiar with DD in my area who was familiar with Xiaflex injections. The injections were done and opened my pinky, finally after 2 years what a relief to finally have a useful hand. I have to wear night splint to keep the fingers from contracting nightly. And wear a spring splint during the day.

Ask your doctor About Xiaflex , also check the search box at the top of this page on this web site for tons of info. on DD alternative treatments. For more information, also Check online Google Xiaflex vs surgery. In most cases surgery is usually the last option.

Kind Regards,
Cherise

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am going to see a doctor tomorrow about the Xiaflex injections. I'm hoping for some good news! Will post again.

Hi, definetly avoid surgery if possible because it can trigger the disease. It happened to me after surgeries 12 years ago. I just repeat the NA every couple of years. a pain but works best for me. D

Diane, that is my huge concern. I'm afraid it will take off and get out of control. I have other symptom that make me believe it could happen. Thanks for your advice.

I had Xiaflex at Stanford in the Phase 3 trials, 2007, before it was approved by the FDA and bought to market. At the time I had DD in one finger, one hand, MCP joint only. Today I have Duprenten's in all four fingers in each hand, MCP and PIP joints and in both hands in space adjacent to thumb. I've spoken to at least a half-dozen other folks, some of them in the studies who have had a serious flare after Xiaflex.

It's well known that*any* intervention can cause a flare but generally it's a flare in the hand that had surgery. To have a flare or disease occur in another hand after Xiaflex is something different and I wish there would be more studies that address this. Since my Xiaflex treatment I've NA in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015. It used to last 2 years abut after the round in 2013 only lasted 1 year and regressed the minute I stopped wearing my hand splints. I now alternate them every night.

May I ask between what you alternate?

Sorry-- it was clear to me :-). One night I wear a splint on my right hand, the next night on my left. ( I try to do at least 45 mins every day on each of two fingers, each hand with "mouse trap splints also) Between my dental appliance, a neck support brace and a possible CPAP machine coming up--I'm one scary dude at night!
