I've had treatment in Vancouver several times in the last 5 years at UBC Hospital and the waiting time has been a couple of months for procedures. Waiting time for evaluation depended on the doctor, but was, if I remember correctly, roughly the same.

Hi! Thanks for responding. Did you have surgery or radiotherapy? I am actually thinking of the radiotherapy clinic in Kelowna for BC or the one in Calgary for Alberta.

Cheers,
Shane

Re: Has anyone been to the clinic in British Columbia or Alberta Canada?

I have just received an email from Dr. Kurien in Calgary. She informs me she is using Prof. Seegenschmeidt's published protocols and that it takes about 1 month to get in for treatments with a referral from your doctor.

I had 1 round of treatments so far in Germany with Prof S and returning for a second round in May. I would now consider going to the doctor here in Calgary (since I live in Calgary), however I would don't know how much experience Dr. Kurien has in determining if it is the right time for the treatments and the extent of the treatments. I was very impressed with Prof S in this regard.

Hope this helps a bit.

Jeff

Yes, all information on how well versed the doctors are here helps!

Anyone else have experience in Western Canada?

Thanks,

Kat

Shane, have you any more information about radiation treatments in British Columbia. I'm particularily interested in the clinic you mentioned in Kelowna.

Have you thought of collagenase treatment? Has anyone had it in Canada? It looks promising!

Finding treatment of Dupruytrens and Ledderhose in British Columbia, Canada is frustrating.

I have early stage Dupruytrens in my left hand and Ledderhose in both feet. I've also had frozen shoulder in the past.

A chiropractor treated the Ledderhose using ShockWave with mixed results. The fibromas shrunk substantially but have regrown on my left foot. I'm going to try it again while looking for other treatments.
A Podiatrist suggested Vapramil cream for 8 weeks with no change in the fibromas.
I'm looking for someone who will treat me with collagenase and am waiting for a response from the company that supplies Xiaflex in Canada.

Good luck!

Re: Has anyone been to the clinic in British Columbia or Alberta Canada?

Hi Kat,

I contacted Kelowna and was told to contact my local cancer agency. I live in a suburb of Vancouver and so I contacted the Vancouver Cancer Agency. I booked an appointment and was told that one doctor would see me as a "non" cancer patient.

So, the process, I had a phone call with the doctor which was really nice as they are very busy. I had some questions I wanted to ask and Dr W answered them patiently. They said they had treated Dupuytrens but only a couple of times and they were very happy that I had all my information from Prof S in Germany.

I meet with Dr W and the technicians and the doctor marked the area to be treated. The technicians made a template and I was scheduled in for treatment. I was clear from the start that it had to happen on one specific week to maximize the effect based on Prof S's information. Dr W assured me it would all be done on that week and no one would bump me or change my schedule.

I showed up early on the first day, a Monday and the Radiation technicians aligned my hand. This took a lot longer than in Germany as Germany has a metal frame for your hand and a power lift. In Vancouver I had to stand on a "brick" to get high up enough to bend my arm into position. I also had to hold my fingers with my other hand so it would align correctly. The technicians though were very very through in their positioning of my hand.

The five days of treatment went quickly and I was more tired at the end of the week. I did see the doctor on Thursday and we had a good discussion. One of the technicians asked me how my hands were at the end of Fridays treatment and I did have about 5 degrees more flexibility. I have almost always been able to do table top and it is easier now.

Regards,
Shane

Hi Shane, your post is most valuable, thanks very much for sharing.

If you don't mind, I would really like to learn more about your procedure, the doctors involved, etc. I found two nodules growing on my right palm and I just sent an email to a friendly doctor I know at BC Cancer to try to learn more about all this.

Again, much appreciate any pointers in advance!

Eric

Re: Has anyone been to the clinic in British Columbia or Alberta Canada?

Hi Eric,

My first round was with the Professor in Germany. He gave me a file with the specs of the traetment. Basicly the area covered and the protical for the second round which most doctors know. Also the timeline for best results.

I am not sure the doctor at the Vancouver Cancer clinic would do the first round. They might and really it comes down to what area do you need treated.

I think if you call the Vancouver Cancer clinic there is only one doctor doing these treatments. She treats breast cancer if I recall correctly for the rest of her case load.

There is a study in the USA which is trying to break down the occurance of Dupuytrens as resulting from several causes. This interests me as it may allow a life style change and elimante the need for RT, NA, .....

PM me if you need more.

MikeNinerSeven
