Just completed Xiaflex procedure

Yesterday morning I had the Xiaflex injections, three on my left hand. Some discomfort but it wasn't that bad. This morning I returned to have the cords broken. Again, a little uncomfortable but the doc made every effort to minimize the discomfort. The anesthesia block was a little painful for a few seconds, felt like an electrical shock!! The worst part was when the cord snapped, the noise and recoil sensation kinda scared me! Didn't hurt, just really freaky, but it's nice to be able to hold my hand flat now for the first time in many years. I would go through it again if necessary, and may have to, as I am having nodules starting on my right hand now. At age 70, I suppose it's a race to see if the grim reaper gets me before the DC comes back again.....

Re: Just completed Xiaflex procedure

2 days after the manipulation I am pleased with the results so far. Some swelling, bruising and a little pain but I am able to extend my hand about 10 degrees beyond flat. I am using the hand as much as possible and fully opening and closing it. The pain is about like the sting/itch/ache after a bee sting, not bad, just uncomfortable. I am pleased so far with the results, there is no way of knowing at this time if the cords will return, and if so, how soon but I would be willing to go through it again if need be. My right hand has not progressed sufficiently to the point of being able to treat it. Hope this helps anybody who is considering Xiaflex.

I think it is a toss-up about Xiaflex. There are many people who have had dismal results including pain from the procedure.

I was willing to take that risk. Many have also had dismal results from surgery, NA and RT. There is no cure, only temporary removal of the collagen bands as they form. Perhaps some day something better will come along but i will probably be dead by then......

Re: Just completed Xiaflex procedure

I am a 56 yr old woman with DD. Pinky PIP at 90%. My Doc asked if I wanted local or general anesthesia for the Xiaflex manipulation. I have seen many posts that this was very painful. What should I ask my dr to use for a "local"? Anything else I should ask? I have heard of wrist blocks and lidocaine .... I'm getting nervous!

Re: Just completed Xiaflex procedure

It's hard to answer your question regarding pain since everyone has a different tolerance for pain. I read on another DD forum that women experience less pain than men during Xiaflex injection, I have no way of knowing whether this is true or not. I've not heard of anyone getting the cord broken while under general anesthesia but it's probably because health insurance companies don't like to pay the extra costs involved-it would become an OR procedure and doctors don't like to take the extra risk with general anesthesia. In my case, I would rate the entire procedure about 5 on a pain scale of 1-10. I would do it again, I didn't think it was that bad, I winced a few times during the injection and the block is uncomfortable but very brief. That probably doesn't answer your question.....

Re: Just completed Xiaflex procedure

Thank you. I appreciate the input. Checked with the nurse and she suggested a twilight. I'm at 90+ degrees and she is pretty sure it will tear. There is no drape so I'm leaning that way- not sure I want to see it. Has anyone had a Dr suggest taking Benadryl right after the injection for the itching?

Mine was only about 30 degrees, but getting worse and my right hand is now developing nodules. WOW! 100 yo! I can't imagine that, but I never thought I'd make to 70 either....

Don't know what a "twilight"is so I can't say if that's a good thing or not... I didn't have any itching with mine, but did have a very small skin tear. I have to keep lotion on the area as the skin seems to be dry and scaly where the cord was.
