Re: Just completed Xiaflex procedure

Its a light general to relax you before the procedure. Guess I'm nervous. I'll keep in mind the lotion to make sure the wound doesn't get dry. Makes sense. Thank you for the input. Anything else you want to tell me or prep me for??

I understand they would like you to be as alert as possible during the injection so you can let them know (ie, shriek) if they inject into a nerve or something. Doc prescribed some Oxycodone but I never needed it. I jumped when the cord snapped-that is not a sound I'm used to hearing coming from body parts. Doc thought he'd hurt me but it just surprised me!! He told me to keep my hand splinted for 3 months and during the day when I can. Splinting seems to be one of the keys to a successful outcome, some suggest 4 months. He referred me to a hand rehab guy to make the splint.

Yes- the twilight is for breaking the cords. The injection is just what it is. I hopethe center pots with the palms are ok but need additional planting around them. Didn't want to send this to anyone else. I know you are tired of hearing me bother you about this - how can I help make this right? I know the team will put it on the model maintenance sheet but not sure Anthony is understanding it. no nerves are hit (my other fingers will be crossed). My doc is suggesting casting for a short period- depending on tear. Absolutely splinting should be in order. How long before you could pull or out weight on it? I am fairly active and do Pilates and Barre often

No bother, I am more than willing to share my experience with this procedure, I has been considering surgery for several years now, but when I found out there was a well qualified doc 12 miles from me, I decided to go for it. I think the next closest would have been over a thousand miles away. I began using my hand as soon as the block wore off, no restrictions, no pain-of course, the block lasted for about 5 hours. About the only thing I couldn't do was clap my hands (due to pain upon sharp impact), something I hadn't been able to do for years. Even at 5 weeks since procedure, my left palm is still sensitive to impact and a little stiff in the morn until I take the splint off and get things moving.

Re: Just completed Xiaflex procedure

Forgive me for jumping in, but I'm really thinking of Xiaflex after having 3 NA's on the same finger and several more quickly getting worse on that hand and now my other hand.

I am looking for a job and it would probably be something along the lines of Administrative Assistant, which is my history. It sounds like typing would be out of the question -- could you give me an idea of how long it might be until I could use my hand(s) for that type of thing? How long the swelling lasts, how much strength would be in my fingers so that I would be able to type, etc.

I know it's a very nebulous question, but I'm getting very concerned about how long it might be till I could get a job where there's heavy keyboarding.

Thanks very much.

Everybody is different. Some have had great success with Xiaflex, others, not so much. I think it's important to select a skilled doc, one who has a history of success with this procedure. I have a suspicion the failed collaganase injections were administered by docs not fully "up to speed" on the procedure. The doc who did mine is a plastic surgeon who has several years specializing on hand reconstruction and is skilled in NA, fasciectomy & other hand surgeries and Xiaflex so he has no preference for any procedure, just what is right for each individual. Do some homework before you select a doc.

Re: Just completed Xiaflex procedure

Thank you for your response.

I just checked on the Xiaflex website physician locator and they list about 10 orthopedic doctors and two of them are marked that they have "extensive experience" with it.

I'll start doing some research on them and others. I hadn't thought about a plastic surgeon until you mentioned it.

Thanks.
