Just diagnosed with Dupuytren's.

I've been in the Air Force for 20 years, (I'm 40) and after several years of trying to figure out what is going on with my hands, I was finally diagnosed with DD. My knuckles ache constantly, and really hurt when I hit them on something, and I have nodules associated with my index finger and middle finger on my left hand, and on my index and ring finger on my right hand. I have pain with all of these nodules. Gripping steering wheel, mowing, opening jars, etc.. and doing any maintenance associated with my job.

After dealing with the frustration of trying to figure out what has been going on for so long, I guess I'm just looking for some insight as to what I can expect as far as future symptoms and treatment over the next few years.

Re: Just diagnosed with Dupuytren's.

Welcome RedHaze

Hopefully all the answers are on this website, and the forum too.

I am a bit surprised you seem to have struggled for some time with a diagnosis. A good hand doctor with experience of DD, should have been able to help, and advise. But a hand surgeon most likely will not know or encourage RT as a treatment, just NA, Xiaflex, and various forms of surgery. Maybe despite the symptoms now, you will never need it.

Start babying your hands for most manual tasks and sports. Keep a photo log of signs and symptoms, to have an objective record of progress one way or the other. But otherwise just get on with life.

Best wishes

SB

Re: Just diagnosed with Dupuytren's.

Dupuytren disease seems to be a fairly unpredictable disease. While general descriptions of how the disease develops are available http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytrens_contracture.html, individually the disease may stop for 10 years or forever or progress quickly. Most patients with nodules will never need treatment but those who do have a variety of options http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytr..._therapies.html (more details under "Treatment" in the website menu). Which treatment is best depends on the specific stage and problem.
