Just had Xiapex here in London
Hi everyone,
Just had Xiapex injections today here in London for DC.
The injections are extremely painful, however have been reassured by the consultant, that will have a local anaesthetic when the cords are broken on Wednesday.
All the best and I will report back.

I had Xiaflex (same thing in US) in my left hand a year ago and am quite pleased with the outcome. I had a few small nodules pop up afterwards, but I can still hyperextend my hand/fingers by 30 degrees and no signs of cords returning so far. I may have to have the same done on my right hand if nodules start developing cords.

I had it done privately, here in London at the Wellington Hospital. My GP made the appointment and fortunately I have private insurance. Tomorrow I am going for the cords to be broken.

Today, the doctor injected me in the wrist to numb my hand and then he broke the cords.
It was not as painful as Monday and although my hand was still bruised and puffy, it seems to be much better.

How brave you are to make the decision to treatment with Xiaplex. Your description of the injections and straightening process is very acurate. I had the injection last Feb. in the US, so I totally get it. It swelled my hand, arm , elbow and lymph nodes. Couldn't move my arm for weeks. Lots of icing. See my pic after injection. Also posted splints.
Now 4 months later all is back to normal and a open finger has made the painful process worth it in my case. My right hand is disfigured and all fingers are curved. Nodes are in the palm area DD is very active at this time. Just happy to have my fingers open enough to wear garden/winter gloves and use my hand again. Therapy and splints for night and day time I wear a spring splint.

Hello today,
After the three injections on Monday I was in tremendous pain, but found some respite by taking paracetamol. Then, when my hand puffed up and was very bruised, I took Ibuprofen, in water soluble sachets so as not to irritate the stomach and to reduce inflammation for when the doc broke the cords.
It was surprising that after all the apparent toughness of the cords how easily they snapped.
Now I can only assess things once the swelling goes down and to see then whether I can lay my hand completely flat.
The decision on who to entrust with dealing with this ghastly disease is a difficult one, so in the end it was my choice to go to my GP, who is excellent. He sent me to the UK's top hand and wrist orthopaedic surgeon and I was pleasantly surprised that he links closely with many of the doctors in other countries that are trying to treat DC.
He thinks it is genetic and then triggered by trauma in my case, after falling while sightseeing in another country.
Oh just remembered. He wants to see me in two or three months time and I have not been required to wear a splint. Perhaps my case was not so bad.

Also see the DD string on all types of splints. Or Google finger/hand spring splints. I use De Royal PIP Acu spring finger extension assist splints.They are custom made to fit. Very tough to wear for almost everything, once the finger has healed. It took mine a couple of months to heal. Take it easy give it time. There are a variety of splints online.
Hope your doing better today and pain meds do help. Ice for swelling and bruising. Stay positive . Looking forward to hear of your success in a few weeks down the road. Your hand therapist will also make a splint designed for you. Ask for a hand therapist if you don't have one assigned. ALSO exercises can help strengthen the hand once your finger has healed enough to move, start when you can lightly move without pain. Little by little you wil gain back movement and hold onto things better. 2-3 months max.
I have been gardening, pulling weeds, chopping foods & much more....doing all my fav things again! AND you will too!

Just to say I have not been given a hand therapist, the doctor told me to flex the hand to exercise it.
I still have my hand bandaged, will take the bandage off tomorrow and apply some plasters on the areas where the needle went in.
On Monday I could not bare to even tap my fingers yet now, I can hold a cup of tea with them. (which I could do before surgery).
He told me to take it easy so have not cooked since surgery and will wait a while before tackling lifting anything out of the oven.
It was sore and ached yesterday evening, but not so much this morning. Some of the swelling and bruising has gone already.
We will not really know until the swelling goes how flat my hand will be, but so far I am very pleased and feel fortunate that we have this new collagenase that is far less invasive than surgery.
Although he is a hand and wrist specialist, I did discuss my feet and he advised that RT may be best.
