Long term muscle weakness after Xiaflex?

I had Xiaflex in my right hand a year ago. Since then, my right wrist has seemed very weak but since my hand had been cupped so long, I just thought the muscle was truly weak. Over the last few months, my right arm has seemed to progressively get weaker and give out quicker. I have backed off some of racquet sports thinking that would help. It just may be an age and use related thing but I’m wondering if anyone else has had something similar occur after getting Xiaflex and the hand?

I’ve not heard of this before. What does your doctor(s) say? Some muscle wasting or weakness can be due to impingement or damage to nerves, but there are usually other symptoms to accompany this. I would start with your doctor, and also consider seeing a physio.

Hi Vaneta. I know from experience with an elbow injury how quickly muscles can shrink when not used. I have no idea if this is in any way related to what you are experiencing and agree that your doctor should examine what is going on. And he or she doesn't give you a satisfactory explanation, get another professional opinion. What is your age?

Re: Long term muscle weakness after Xiaflex?

I have not talked to the doctor because I guess I was trying to ascertain if this might be related to the Xiaflex. I generally play six or seven hours of racquet sports a week. If I play more than that, my shoulder and arm hurts. That’s different to me than being weak. For a couple of months I’ve cut back to four or five hours of racquet sports per week just because of other body overuse issues. It’s not anything drastic yet and sometimes I think I am imagining it. I just wanted to check this forum because in case anyone else had had those issues, I at least would know an avenue to check out even though there might not be anything to be done about it if it were related to the drug. Thanks for your responses. ( I am 63)

Re: Long term muscle weakness after Xiaflex?

I do 4+ hours per week tennis, don’t have muscle weakness as such, but am prone to tendinitis in wrist, elbow, shoulder, knees, despite working out with weights and bands to strengthen these areas. Do you also work out separately to strengthen the muscles used in your racquet sports? I am a tad older than you and put it down to natural age process, and poor technique when trying to keep up with the youngsters on the court. Maybe there is a susceptibility to inflammation or joint weakness, I no longer take glucosamine but do eat oily fish. I use support braces even when not injured as I find they help.
