Nodule question

Is it typical for a nodule to be smaller and somewhat softer in the morning? That's how mine is, but tonight it's red and angry looking after a long day at the computer and mouse.

I'm still a bit confused about treatment for a nodule early on. Have those who have had RT early on delayed contracture or cords forming?

Those who have had RT early on, how early?

I'm surprised at the different sites that describe DD as not painful because I have pain in my hand with the nodule. My other hand, it's like the skin on the palm and fingers hurts.

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Nodule question

Hi I can only give you my take. I am not sure if the nodule is softer or if the tissue around the nodule allows it to move deeper into the tissue of the hand and you think it is softer. The nodules actually join together and attach to the tissue to form the cord then contraction. You may not feel the newly forming nodule. I had Rt in 07 after a repeat surgery and within 4 week numerous nodules formed on the Right hand which had the surgery . I only had one session of 5daily treatments of 3 Gy . The nodules disappeared however it did not affect the cord which continued to cause contraction. Last Year I had PNF on the index finger which had been operated on with success. With regards to pain it is subjective and some patients report pain others not.
I have never needed to take anything after surgery yet others have real problems.

I think the reality is that symptoms vary quite a bit from one person to another. My father had some use aggravation with his, but it was after active contractures had progressed in earnest. There may be (I'm no doctor) a correlation between use and pain. RT has a very high success rate, well over 80%, for treatments done in the nodular or N/1 stage. I had my RT (fist series with the next set next month) about one year after I first detected early DC nodules, and as of now have no active contracture, although I can feel some small chords.

Best wishes on getting yours successfully treated.

Kevin

Re: Nodule question

Hi Chewie,

I'm fairly new at this, so my experience is limited. I have not noticed any changes in my nodules during the day (size, firmness, or color). I do get pain sometimes, and it could be associated with use. (For example, I did a lot of housecleaning today and now my nodules are pretty sore. Lesson learned to me to lighten up on my efforts.) I also think that sometimes when I feel pain for no reason that it's a sign that the disease is active, as my nodules have appeared rather quickly.

I had noticed 3 nodules on my left hand about 7 weeks ago. By time I had radiation done, 6 weeks after initially finding nodules, I found a cord, another nodule, and an area where there are changes under the skin (hardening). I also had the very early beginnings of a nodule on my right hand. I went ahead and had both hands done because the disease appears to be progressing rapidly for me. I did not, and do not, have any contracture. My goal in having the RT was to try to stop the progression of the disease before that stage.

Hope this is useful.

Karen
