Nodules and cords at base of thumb

For those of you that have nodules and/or cords involving your thumbs I have a question. I get spasms in the area above the webbing, closer to my finger bone in both hands several times a week. This generally happens after I've held a book with my thumb and index finger but has also happened spontaeously. It started in the hand with the index finger that has a 35 degree contracture but I now also get it in the one with a 5 degree contracture--index finger. Thumb has not started contracting yet but the cords are palpable. Anyone else have this experience? it's very disconcerting and quite different from "claw hands."

Re: Nodules and cords at base of thumb

I have 2 cords restricting my thumb in two plains. This restriction causes painful cramps in and around thumb. For me grasping and pinching causes the cramps. When I 1st found this website & forum I felt like my symptoms were not explained which made me doubt that I had this disease. My cords just appear and then start tightening. I've had a biopsy confirming that the diseased cord is dupuytren's.
The 2 months that I was cord free were fanatic!!
If you find a solution to the cramps I'd love to hear them!!! Massaging helps but them I just get another cramp in the other hand.

Re: Nodules and cords at base of thumb

Hi Diane,

My left thumb started triggering about 10 months ago, with involvement of the index finger for good measure.... and nodules and cords swiftly became visible.

I have two nodules just above the base of my left thumb, another two just under it and each of these last connected by palpable cords - one to the lower mid-palm and the other to just under the index finger - where a soft nodule is just starting to form.

Being extremely lucky my right hand thumb has just started to give the same 'triggering' symptoms so that looks as if it's just a matter of time!

I'm finding the main problem, aside from the pain they're giving when I forget about them, is the seemingly impossible task of getting the top off a bottle! Ideas anyone?

Hi Humana,

Grasping, pinching, ouch!
As you say, massage helps to a point - but now both hands are presenting the same symptoms it's next to impossible!

Cheers

Re: Nodules and cords at base of thumb

My thumb on the right hand is pulling in toward the palm. There is a very thick and very prominent cord in the webbing between that thumb and the index finger. There are already pits in that cord on the web. And where the pits/dimpling are, it is very painful. Of course, that is where a pen sits when I write or the fork or knife when eating. I haven't experienced cramps but I must have weakness because I easily drop items when I'm using my thumb.

Right now I still have my teenager around to help with tasks I can't do. Since both of my hands are in bad shape, there's a lot I can't do. I did buy an electric can opener since a manual was out of the question. I have rubber grip pads that work on jar lids sometimes. Most of the time I ask someone else to open them for me. I struggle to use some cleaning tools like a toilet brush or the sponge that has a handle on it (use it to clean tubs and showers), so my husband does those bathroom chores for me.

We have a large and deep garden tub and I love using it. But I was having a real time getting out because I couldn't lay my hands on the side of the tub to pull myself out. Last weekend my husband install a nice grip bar on the wall and it has made a huge difference. It feels much safer getting in and out.

I am curious to know
Is your cord on the inside of the palm going from thumb to finger? Or is it on the outside meaning the top of the hand?

Re: Nodules and cords at base of thumb

Hi Jolene,

All my cords are running on the inside of my palm. From the description Dawn gives I'd think hers are in roughly the same place, though I'm sure she'll confirm that one way or the other!

Cheers,

Re: Nodules and cords at base of thumb

I was at the hand surgeon today and he gave my thumbs a lot of attention. I started with nodules on the top of the webbing between my index finger and thumb. Very, very quickly those two nodules turned into a thick cord that forms the top of the webbing. There is also a cord that runs off the top of the webbing, down into my palm and up toward the base of the thumb. Today, the surgeon pointed out a cord that runs from the base of my index finger, down into the palm and is curving over toward the thumb.

I'll try to upload a picture that helps more than trying to describe it. lol

Re: Nodules and cords at base of thumb

Here is a picture I just took. The two circles (kinda messy because I was drawing with my left hand) are the original nodules. The line going from those nodules is one cord. The other two lines are also cords. So a total of 3 cords are forming between my index finger and thumb. Does that help?

I'm having hand surgery next Wednesday (see my thread titled "Saw hand surgeon today") on the pinky and middle finger. Because the thumb cords are very active right now, he cannot work on those during this surgery. So we're going to wait and watch those for now.

moondanc:
This generally happens after I've held a book with my thumb and index finger but has also happened spontaeously.

A man walks into his doctor's office, and says, "Doctor, it hurts when I do this (makes motion)."
The doctor says, "Don't do that."
