Pain with surgery

I had surgery on the 7th. I didn't think it would be this painful nor did I think I would swell and bruise this bad. As far as I know my incision was closed, no surgical complications. I do have some other deformity in the tendon of my little finger but I won't know anything until I see my Dr on the 20th. I just don't know what is normal.

Re: Pain with surgery

Hi Raven,

welcome to our forum! I am very sorry to hear that your surgery is still that painful! Swelling is not uncommon. Usually swelling will be strongly reduced already after a few weeks but it might persist longer. In my case it took about 6 months until it was completely gone. Your surgeon surely has informed you about possible side effects but you might also have a look at http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytr...ideeffects.html.

Re: Pain with surgery

Thank you for the reply and thank you for the information. My Dr did not tell me how lengthy the recovery time would be. He was shocked I had dupuytren's at my age and the severity. Again I appreciate the response

Ask about nursing support for the wound and OT support for the recovery. Don't just ask, insist.

Re: Pain with surgery

I never heard of this disease until my diagnosis last month and definitely never met anyone else with it. Have any of you had the reoccurring issues, multiple surgeries? I worry about that especially with my Dr concerned about how young I am and the severity of the contracture.

Re: Pain with surgery

Unfortunately there is no cure for Dupuytren's and the disease will always come back. But if it takes 50 years to come back, who cares? If it takes onyl 1 year to come back, that's bad and might need further treatments, including surgery. Some people have only 1 surgery in ther life time, some had 5 or - very rarely - even more.

How old are you and how severe was your contracture?

Wolfgang

I'm 37 and it was grade 3. My little finger might get to 45 degree straight. It was completely contracted closed

Re: Pain with surgery

I wonder why your surgeon did not recommend you try NA or Xiaflex? There may be good clinical reasons for this, but the least invasive options where possible are usually to be preferred. Your post also indicates you had surgery within weeks of a diagnosis. What was the reason for that? As a benign condition that develops relatively slowly, it pays to take time to research the condition and treatment choices.

Re: Pain with surgery

Hi I fall at the extreme end of the spectrum having had many surgeries including skin grafts. I would make sure that you keep your hand elevated ,so that the hand is resting somewhere on the shoulder line above the heart. Flex the hand gently often during the day, as this will help reduce the swelling. Try with the assistance of your other hand to make a closed first. Gently does it. You might seek some assistance from a hand therapist and when you are comfortable and the swelling has subsided try wearing a night splint to prevent further contraction. Have you any scar tissue ? If so apply some scar crème as scar tissue can create contraction . Keep up the exercise, but don't overdo it especially until any stiches are removed which was usually 7 to 10 days in my case.

Re: Pain with surgery

That's early but not dramatically early. The average age of onset is at about 46 http://www.dupuytren-online.info/patient_survey.html. Occasionally patients already develop Dupuytren's in their teens; I myself had my first treatment at the age of 35.

Just curious: have you been a smoker? Smoking seems to be causing an earlier onset of Dupuytren disease.

I agree with SpanishBuddha: did your doctor discuss with you minimally invasive options (PNF and collagenase injection) and did he tell you that it does not make a difference whether you are treated now or a couple of months later? Or did he tell you that you are having a dramatic disease and need surgery as quickly as possible?
