Re: Pain with surgery

excellent points ... a doctor recently told me ... about an unrelated condition and potential surgery I may need ...

" get a doctor who is NOT in a rush and who will take his or her time " ...same goes for other procedures ...including colonoscopy ...they rush through that with a scope ..to get the next one ..and in the process miss stuff..assembly line atmosphere ...

Re: Pain with surgery

I had NA done with Dr. Denkler in Larskpur (San Francisco) California some years ago. He did NOT rush. All in all I'd say the procedure ran about an hour although the actual NA process probably took about 30 minutes. Throughout the procedure, as well as before and after, Dr. Denkler displayed an outstanding 'bedside" manner, inclusive of making recommendations as to post-procedure care, which turned out to be extremely helpful.

Dr. Eaton did my 1st N/A procedure and I've tried another Dr. since Dr Eaton is no longer in practice and I had to wear a splint with the second procedure. I wish I could find another Doctor that can perform NA as proficient as Dr. Eaton.

Re: Pain with surgery

I am 54 years old. I had 55 degree's of contracture on the small finger at the MIP joint. I had a very large nodule between the MIP and PIP joints and in the palm. I had a Palmar Fasciectomy and zPlasty surgery on 7/26/16. I have had no pain from the surgery at all. Well....a small amount removing the 53 stitches! I'm doing my own scar massage, stretching, wearing Scaraway pads and a splint at night. I'll be having NA on the right hand probably next year. I also have Ledderhose in the left foot, which is not painful and doesn't bother me at all.

Sounds promising. Are you also doing physical therapy? How is the hand function coming on (flexion, making fist, etc)?

Best wishes SB

Yes, I did 3 weeks of PT. They used heat, massage, PT Putty and stretching. I think the hand is coming well. I can't make a fist in the morning after wearing the splint, but after heat and stretching I can make a fist throughout the day. The grip strength has continued to increase. I squeeze the putty for about 10 minutes, twice a day. I still have numbness in some of the palm and the lower half of the small finger on the incision side.

Why NA next year when the PF went so well ?
jbruce...I visited the first doctor 2 years ago in Texas, when I had about 10% contracture. She told me to come back when it was contracted to the point where I couldn't get my hand in my pocket. Bad advice in my opinion. I moved about a year ago to Georgia. This year the contracture got to 45 degrees and was causing problems. I found a doctor that learned the NA procedure from Dr. Eaton, so I went to her, and unfortunately she said the disease was progressed too far for NA to work and scheduled me for surgery 2 months later. In the 2 months it had contracted to 55 degrees. I asked her to look at my right hand which has nodules and starting a cord. She said she thinks in 1 year that will be a good candidate for NA. I just thought I would give the NA a try and leave the surgery as a last resort. She feels I'll need the surgery eventually based on the severity of the other hand. I feel like a fool listening to the first Dr. and letting it go as long as I did.

Re: Pain with surgery

Sorry to hear, jahickey. I don't really understand why a 45 or 55° contracture alone would prevent successful NA. Do you have extremely large nodules or cords, or what reason is your doctor giving for wanting to do surgery after all? Has she mentioned the possibiity of radiotherapy on your other hand? The fact that she has learned from Dr. Eaton is a good point, but are you sure this is now the best possible course of action for either hand? I know, good DD professionals are often hard to find!
