I've had hand surgery but not for DD. Even so people on here have posted examples of recovery taking 3-12 months after surgery for DD. So patience and persevere with the exercises recommended by your therapist.

I had surgery for DD on my left hand , fairly extensive ! Resulting in incisions across my palm , ring , middle and index fingers , also the span between thumb and index finger . This was nearly two years ago , It took me several months to make a fist , with daily massaging of "bio-oil" in my hand , and also daily physiotherapy exercises . I still have extensive scarring , with some "numbness" in my index finger . I accept that my hand will never be normal ( new dd nodule now appeared in my palm again ) , luckily it does not yet interfere with my hobbies ( fly fishing/fly tying and beach fishing ) .

Everybody has different recovery rates and levels of success with the operation . My advice would be to persevere with the physiotherapy and try and use the hand as normally as possible .

Unfortunately my right hand also has DD , and is quiet severe . I have booked myself in for the Xiapex treatment in early 2016 . My consultant has advised that doing nothing is not an option , Will report on this site when I have the treatment .

I had surgery and would think that your symptoms may not be typical (most hands recover faster) but not exceptional either. It might well take 3 or more months untiil you can actively make a fist (i.e. without support from the other hand). The important question is: did your hand improve over the last 3 months? Is it still swollen?

My surgery was 15 years ago but my hand never recovered to become like a completely healthy hand again. I can still feel where the cuts were made. But that's to be expected because the connective tissue of the hand is a very complex, sensitive and elastic structure and what grows after surgery is inelastic, insensitive scarring. Surgeons usually won't explain that to the patient because they are probably (and wrongly) considering this as self-evident.

Hi , most of my physiotherapy was using "putty" , a soft compound , by just gently squeezing it in the palm of my hand . I found that it was something I could do , watching TV or reading . The worst thing I had in the early stages after the operation was wearing a splint at night , resulting in a very stiff hand in the morning . This I resolved by gradually warming my hand in warm water , then massage with the "Bio-Oil" , followed by the physiotherapy . I had my operation in January 2014 . even after a few months I had to wear a glove on my left hand to keep it warm and to prevent it getting stiff .

This operation has left me with prominent scarring , some numbness in my index finger , and a bent/lumpy ring finger ( this originally was the only reasonably straight finger I had) ! Although I am almost able to put my hand flat on a table .

Unfortunately a small nodule was left in my palm , which is now getting larger and is beginning to tighten .

I hope my condition has not been passed to my children/grand children , as my brother has some small nodules and my paternal grandmother had DD late in her life ( mine started in my 40s ) .

My advise would be to observe what is best for you , and it will take time . Best wishes .

HI, I HAD SURGERY SAME TWO FINGERS AS YOU, JULY 24,15. SOUNDS LIKE WE ARE HEALING ABOUT THE SAME,EXCEPT MY FINGERS ARE NOT STRAIGHT. I HAVE NOT WENT BACK TO WORK AND REALLY FEEL I CAN NO LONGER DO MY CURRENT JOB. MANUFACTURING PLANT, VERY HANDS ON AND MY OTHER HAND IS ACTIVE NOW. GOOD LUCK TO YOU
