RT in Canada vs. Germany

I am in early stage Dupuytren's and Ledderhose. Thanks to this website I have already been in contact with Dr. Seegenschmeidt in Hamburg regarding the possibility of having treatment done in Germany. Based on photographs and my own self examination, he thinks I am a good candidate for RT treatments. I was not given this option so far by my the doctors I have seen here in Calgary, but I am going to see a Hand Specialist next week and I will be bringing RT treatment up with him. Based on what I have researched, I believe the RT treatment is my best option right now and I have the opinion that I would like my RT to be performed by Dr. Seegenschmeidt, because he does seem to be the expert in this field. This, of course will cost more due to the travel required, but I feel taking care of my hands is a top priority, so I am willing to spend the money.

That being said, I would appreciate anyone's opinion on having the treatment done here in Canada as opposed to Germany. I would love to hear from anyone who has had the treatments done in Canada (and Calgary in particular) and what their outcomes and experiences were.

Re: RT in Canada vs. Germany

I guess the lack of response answers my question in a way. Apparently not a lot of people have had RT done in Canada. I had a consultation with a hand specialist today and he told me he had never seen a patient who had used RT for Dupuytren's here in Calgary. I asked him his opinion and he didn't exactly advise me against it, but said he had little experience with it, so couldn't really comment.

I have made up my mind to book a flight to Hamburg in the new year and have RT done by the expert!

Hello,

Did you find out any more info about RT in Canada. I was just recently diagnosed with Dupuytren.

Thanks

Re: RT in Canada vs. Germany

Hi!
There are several doctors across Canada now doing radiation treatments for Dupuytrens. I also have LD in my feet and had those treatments done in Calgary by Dr. Elizabeth Kurien. She used the same protocols that Dr. Seegenschmidt came up with in Hamburg. I have had successful treatments on both my hands in Germany (by Dr. S) and on my feet in Calgary by Dr Kurien. Some lumps have actually shrunk and it has stopped any further progression at this point. There are some other radiotherapy doctors listed on the IDS website -

I know there are other doctors in other cancer clinics doing the same work, you just need to get a referral from your doctor to go and see them. My doctor had no idea about radiation treatments for DD, but after some research I did manage to point her in the right direction.

Where are you located in Canada?

Wow,

Thanks for the quick response. Right after sending that message I found the list of RT docs in Canada. I am living in Canada and I just spoke with Dr. Catton's assistant. Hopefully I will get a referral tomorrow from my GP.

Cheers!

I have been an LD/DD patient of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, where Dr. Catton practices, since mid-2015. You will be very well treated as part of its sarcoma clinic. I have had RT on one LD foot and am currently having RT on one hand with DD, which recurred four years after surgery.

Princess Margaret is a top cancer hospital that began treating DD/LD just a couple of years ago. Dr. Catton and his peers in radiation oncology are now seeing one new DD or LD patient a week, I was told this past summer – I guess word is getting around. The hospital told another patient I know that it is eager to learn how to help patients like us. But of course it does not have the experience of Prof S and others in Germany and Europe who specialize in the disease.

A year after RT on my foot, I cannot yet say if it is a success for me personally. I still feel discomfort (which could possibly be the result of something else). However, if it stops the growth of nodules, I will likely be happy.

Hi - I live in British Columbia and I am looking to have my right hand treated. I notice the last post for Canadian Dr. using radiation therapy was in 2016. From those posts it looked like Dr. Kurien had the most experience. Does anyone have any more recent experience in Western Canada - maybe even British Columbia? Thanks for any information, Liz

There are some in British Columbia listed by DART here http://www.dupuytrensdiseasesupport.com/...r-than-usa.html as a list it but says nothing about recent experience.
