The prevelance of DC in patience with Psoriasis. Just wondering how many of you have Psoriasis too?

In a clinical study published by a psoriasis clinic, patience with palmoplantar psoriasis were more likely to develop Dupuytrens contracture . I also have palmoplantar Psoriasis and was curious how many on this forum also have Palm Psoriasis along with DC.

Dupuytren contracture (DC) is a fibrocontractile disease of the palms, while psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease.

The study showed a definite correlation between Palm Psoriasis and DC. Which could in the future alert hand surgeons to look for signs of DC in a patient with palmoplantar P.

I have had palmoplantar Psoriasis for years and the nodes slowly developed in my palms for over 20 years. Much of the research suggests that the immune system has set DC in motion thru Psoriasis.

There has been research recently published in the Scientific Data published by Dermatology Ass. In 2014.

If you search back through the forum, psoriasis has been mentioned several times by people developing DD, including cases of palmoplantar psoriasis. PubMed has at least one paper finding statistical correlation http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25196833

Hi Spanishbudda,

Thank you for referring more studies that palmoplantar psoriasis has been a factor in DC. Are there other factors ? Yes many!

That alone makes me wonder if the immune system is somehow responsible for DC.

In psoriasis the immune system works thru the interluken IL-17 & IL-23 pathway to send signals to the build up of skin rapidly with extreme itching. Psoriasis is not just a disease outside the body, it is also inside. I have had P. since a young child. And nodes in my palms for 20 years. Psoriasis and DC were both studied very little until the past few years. Psoriasis is heriditary as DC in most case studies and in my case .

So I question that perhaps DC is also jump started by the immune system as I have read many studies that DC is a form of arthritis as my doctor has concured.

ARTHRITIS is a autoimmune disease the body is sending out antibodies basically attacking itself. As in DC the correlation is also the build up of collagen into nodes. As in psoriasis the antibodies sent out attacking the body is a build up of excess skin. Each disease is also heriditary . Someone in my family has had each of these diseases. Many clinical studies report that as well.

May I indulge my curiosity and go back to my origional question . I am taking a census or survey of sorts.
Just wondering how many members on this forum have palm psoriasis or any type of Psoriasis as well as hand arthritis and also have DC. ?

I would encourage those here on this forum who can associate their DC with the correlation related to these other diseases mentioned, may be a topic worth exploring.

Thank you,
Kind Regards,
Cherise

Very interesting research. I also have psoriasis and was diagnosed at 7 years old with it covering most of my trunk front and back. Also have leukaemia, reynards and lupus as well as the DD and LD. Lots of immune problems going on here.

Hello Vonmae.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I am sorry to hear you have so many immune problems. Life must be a daily struggle for you. I hope you have lots of support and good doctors.

What stage of DD and LD are you in ? I am in stage 4 with DD & in level 2 with LD,both in active stage. My Psoriasis is in remission at this point.

Most of the studies I have come across emphasized the immune system does have a very close connection with DD and LD as well as many others you mentioned. Inflammation is usually the main issue responsible for pain and other diseases. Psoriasis is a disease of inflammation inside the body as well as outside.

Psoriasis is also responsible for Psoriatic arthritis a severe form of arthritis causing serious painful bone deformities. I have psoriatic arthritis,Psoriasis, DD, & LD. Psoriasis is not just skin deep it can cause inflammation of internal organs.

I was just wondering if you can you identify any family members who may have had some of the health problems you mentioned or similiar immune diseases? Some of these diseases can be hereditary. Others have no family history. I know in my case psoriasis runs in our family as well as DD and LD , goes back thru many generations. We are just learning how this can all connect together. With more research perhaps our great grand children will not have to suffer as we have.

Thank you,
Kind Regards
Cherise

Re: The prevelance of DC in patience with Psoriasis. Just wondering how many of you have Psoriasis too?

Hi Cherise,

My DD affects all fingers in my right hand and two in my left. I had RT treatment on both hands about 18mths ago. The nodules in right hand have reduced in size and cords have softened but nodule in left hand has grown in size, so a partial response. The LD in my foot presented itself as a large hard nodule about 5 months ago but it is causing quite a bit of pain so I am hoping to have RT on it soon.

My father had dupuytrens in his little finger and his mother was crippled with LD in her feet. My father also had leukaemia and ulcerative colitis (auto-immune disease) and psoriasis is also in his mothers side of family. I forgot to mention I also have the psoriatic arthritis. I reckon I was sure standing in the wrong line when the gene pool was handed out as I am the only one in my family group with these inheriated problems. I learnt the only thing to do is just to try to deal with each problem as it comes along but sure think enough is enough sometimes.

Vonmae

hi Vonmae,

Boy that last sentence says it all. We both seem to have the gene pool from both parents all into one person. I am sorry to hear you too have psoriatic A. As it is very painful. All my great grand parents from both sides are from Ireland and Germany, some Canadians/England And some from Holland.

My grandmother father's side, suffered from all these diseases in our family, whereas my mother seemed to only have OA & P. , Diabetes and heart disease ran in both. I have managed not to have diabetes type ll or heart disease. I am a non sitting individual. I make myself move even if it's playing with the dogs or out feeding the horses. I try to stay busy knowing my limitations.

I have OA in both hips & both were replaced and one knee. PsA in my hands and DD in my hands and shoulders one is slightly frozen and not even going to mess with it. All the docs want to do is replace it and I'm done with metal joint replacements. Last year the hip joint I had was recalled by the manufacturer and had to have a revision. So for now the pain of dealing with what I have left is insignificant compared to joint replacement pain.

I ice my feet three times a day & roll them on a frozen bottle of water which has helped soften the nodes on my feet. The DD In rt hand are active an slowly contracting. Due to surgery 3 yrs ago. I do exercises etc. wear a splint., my left hand the cords are thick and the fingers are not contracting. I'm not touching that hand , both wrists too are toast. My feet are very bad and painful. So shoes with soft silicone insoles and arches are a must. Also have Morton's nerve damage in both feet. And starting to get foot drop from hip joint replacement. I am lucky in many ways. I don't have to deal with some of the serious issues you face every day. Really management of diseases is essential in many cases. I don't know how you do it. I hope u have plenty of support. Music, movies,Scrap booking, Helps with the stress. I'm sure u have some ways to decompress too!

As we age life becomes more precious & every day there are new drugs approved for diseases. For instance I take a bio drug for PsA ,it helps stop the damage to bones. And we'll we know about Xiaflex another bio drug for DD. Also another bio drug was injected in my back for herniated discs. & Degenerative A. All the bio drugs worked well .

By the way my father is still living. I take care of him with the help of other family members, he's 95 yrs old. One of the few left from WWII.

My aunt died at 96 yrs. So I'm not sure which will run in my favor. My aunt is on my mother's side of the family.

I hope you have more good days than bad. It's not easy struggling with autoimmune disorders ,systemic or leukemia.

I enjoy chatting with u . I try to just take one day at a time. That the best I can do.

Kind Regards,
Cherise

Hi Cherise,

I symphatise with you as you have a lot to deal with as well. I forgot to mention that my heritage on both sides is English and Scottish. The Viking influence huh. My Dad died 3 years ago of leukaemia and my Mum 2 years ago of multiple myeloma. You mentioned that you hoped I had lots of support. The answer is only my darling husband. He is my rock. I have two sisters but couldn't call them that after the terrible way they have treated me since my parents death. When I went up for my dads funeral they had put mum in hospital, locked me out of mums house (even though she told them to let me in) and told me to go back where I came from and hurry up and die along with other terrible things. Greed of course as they were guarding a very large amount of money in a safe in the house which they got in the end. I have really struggled these last 3 years trying to come to terms with everything. My current husband is my second. My first one was a real mongrel who beat me up and took my two sons away from me. Sorry to vent on you but maybe it was good having someone to talk to.

Regards,
Vonmae

Re: The prevelance of DC in patience with Psoriasis. Just wondering how many of you have Psoriasis too?

Hi Vonmae ,

It sounds like you have had more than your share of family betrayal! Nothing worse. That is the kind of stress that can have a serious effect on health issues. The past should be left in the past or it can steal your future. The present is important to stay positive for the future. Live life for what tomarrow can bring, and not for what yesterday has taken away. Every day is a gift... Life is a GIFT.

It's OK to vent, we all need that and to know u chose me thru this forum I appreciate ur confidence & I totally get it!
Ur hubby sounds very loving and kind and great support.

Sometimes we get more on our plates than others. It's what we chose to learn from these trials and how we choose to move on. When it's time to let go of the negatives and learn something new about ourselves our strengths and our own power to heal and be grateful. Yes Grateful, that u have so much more than those who denied u . You have a heart and intelligence and the knowledge to share what you have and never allow negativity in ur life again. I am very sorry about ur mother and father. It's very hard to loose our loved ones. This too will pass! Time has the power to heal. Life is a challenge and has great rewards.

Kind Regards,
Cherise
