those dang knuckle pads

47 year old male, 2 months out from Rt. The biggest pain so far has been these knuckle pads. I have thyroid disease and am basically exhausted all the time plus i have these painful knuckle pads.

Has anyone ever had surgery to remove these suckers? Good or bad?

Re: those dang knuckle pads

I have them and I know others with DD have complained about them. I guess I'm lucky, mine don't hurt. I have thought about using a pumice stone to try to remove them, but I'm afraid I might unleash the DD gods....

Re: those dang knuckle pads

I have quite large knuckle pads (bigger than seen in your photo, bragging now ). They don't normally hurt, unless I knock them, or get a splinter in, like right now from a firethorn which has inflamed the affected one. Last year one grew quickly all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, but since then unlike nodules it has gone down. I too have had RT and it didn't touch them, maybe the beam didn't penetrate that far, but a small patch of keratosis was cured.

I know someone who did have surgery, to remove them, a female. They came back! Try icing them to relieve pain.

Re: those dang knuckle pads

Sorry I didn't answer earlier - I didn't know the lump on my joint was called a knuckle pad!

I have one too that recently showed up very quckly. It's on my little finger, which I've had NA on three times. I have to get another NA on that finger, so I"ll see what he says. The pad doesn't hurt except if I rub it or knock it against something.

Now that I know what they're called, I'll pay more attention to posts that mention them!

I got 'em. They hurt. I won't do any more surgery.

Re: those dang knuckle pads

Hello--I'm new to the forum. I have painful knuckle pads and I was just diagnosed last week. Ironically, I had one previously--about 10 years ago and had it surgically removed with success. I had asked the hand surgeon if it was Dupuytrens or related and he said no. (My father had Dupuytrens and I believe that his father had Ledderhose.) The biopsy results came back as rheumatoid arthritis and the surgeon said that it was inaccurate and just forget about it and live my life. About a year ago, another one appeared on my right index finger and I had that one surgically removed. It was successful too however I had to go through some physical therapy due to scar tissue formation to regain full function. A few months ago, two appeared seemingly overnight one on each hand different fingers. One is quite large compared to my previous ones and these are a bit more painful, sometimes waking me at night. I had been researching online as to what this may be because the 2 hand surgeons did not seem to know and dismissed any concerns of it being related to Dupuytrens. Last week, I went to another hand surgeon and was diagnosed within a minute. I will have these two removed surgically as well at some point. I am a pediatric dentist and sometimes my gloves cause the nodes to hurt. Also, the one on my left ring finger is competing with my wedding ring for attention

Welcome babytoothdoc

Thanks for sharing, and fingers crossed (!) for the surgery. I hope you found this site useful. There's a little but more info on these lumps on the BDS site here http://dupuytrens-society.org.uk/disease_info/Frozen.html

Best wishes
SB
