Xiaflex & Allergies

I shortly will be going for my first Xiaflex injection and I read one should make sure one is not allergic to collagenese. (Sorry. Don't know how to spell that.) My question is 'How does one know if one is allergic or not?'.

Also would love any other advice anyone has.

Thanks. Mel

Hi Meliora

What a good question. I have a severe allergy to a couple of commonly used drugs and have wondered about that myself just in case I ever decided to have Xiaflex. I would guess the first step is your physician, and then the physician who will do the injection. Personally, I would be inclined for myself, to discuss and ask my GP to prescribe something like Santyl in advance, so that I could test it on my skin in sensitive areas to see what happens. But, something to discuss with your physician.

Edit to add, my other intention should I ever have the injection, is to make sure the doctor doing it has a kit available to treat anaphylactic shock. But I have the allergies mentioned, maybe you do not?

Re: Xiaflex & Allergies

Mel,

Quote[Q: What is being done to mitigate the risks associated with XIAFLEX® use?
A: At the request of the FDA, Auxilium has developed a training guide as part of the XIAFLEX® REMS program.1 The FDA-approved training guide informs HCPs about the risks associated with XIAFLEX® use, including tendon rupture and other serious adverse events of the injected extremity, and the possible risks of severe hypersensitivity events. It also provides instructions on the proper preparation and administration of XIAFLEX® to reduce the risks of serious adverse events. Physicians must complete the XIAFLEX® Xperience™ training and enrollment process before their healthcare facility may receive XIAFLEX® orders. For product-related questions, to report adverse events, or to enroll in the XIAFLEX® XperienceTM program] end quote.

This site on Xiaflex answers many questions regarding the allergy issue. The doctors are trained & ready to administer meds at the time of the injestion if there is a allergic reaction. Most patients experience itching. There is no way of knowing until the injection is implemented if the patient has a allergic reaction. See more on this question and more answers below .
