Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

I had a Xiapex injection into my little finger. I didn't experience it painful and for the manipulation on the next day the finger or hand are usually numbed anyway. I don't think you need to worry about pain. Of course you can feel the injection but it is not specifically painful, maybe somewhat like a blood collection.

Are the injections very painful? I have a low threshold of pain and wondered how I can control the knee-jerk reaction of pulling away my hand.

I am due to have xiaflex in 2 weeks in the UK. I am a little concerned that since being on the waiting list my little finger has gone worse. It is bent more than 45 degrees. This in turn has caused me to bang the knuckle on more than one occasion and now the knuckle is swollen and painful especially in the cold. Do you think they will still do the injection and manipulation even if the knuckle is red/purple and swollen.
Use some ice to bring the swelling down, and wear a glove if you can or cover it over instead with a padded protective dressing. Should heal a bit over two weeks. I can't see that really being an obstacle to having Xiapex. Is that private or NHS?

I had padding on but it just irritated more. will try ice though and I do cover it when out.

It is NHS and I just found out that the consultant who I am under and who was fully versed in the procedure is not doing it but another consultant who although I would presume has been trained in this it is not his speciality.

I have not had the treatment. It has been reported on here that it is the injection of anaesthetic that is rather painful, like a bee sting, but temporary. I think they do that for both the colleganase injection and the subsequent breaking of the cord. What do you do when the dentist numbs you?

Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

I had my left hand done in July 2014 and I am very pleased with the outcome. The pain of the injection is moderate, to me it was like a bee sting, as has been mentioned previously. I had injections in three spots, close together. Once the needle was withdrawn there was no residual pain. The following day I had the cord snapped. They flooded the area with a topical anesthetic while injecting the block. I felt a sensation like a very brief small electrical shock then the numbing set in quickly. The snapping noise startled me, doc thought he had hurt me but it just caught me by surprise, kinda like snapping a large carrot in half. No pain afterwards, some bruising and a little soreness and one small 5mm tear in my skin. I wore a splint nightly for a month and also flexed my hand several times daily and I can easily hyperextend my hand 30 degrees now, no signs of recurring DC, although it can happen to some. I have nodules growing on my right hand and if they progress on to cords and contracture I wouldn't hesitate have the Xiaflex procedure on that hand too.

Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

WELL I TOO HAVE JUST HAD THE INJECTION FOR MY LITTLE FINGER TODAY. OK WAS PAINFUL BUT NOT FOR LONG AND ITS DONE NOW. I WAS BANDAGED AND NEED TO RETURN IN 2 DAYS. HOWEVER MY HAND IS VERY PAINFUL ALONG SIDE AND PALM AND YES I HAVE TAKEN PAIN KILLERS. NOBODY MENTIONED THIS AFTER PAIN. IS THIS COMMON?

CONSULTANT SAID MIGHT BE SORE BUT THIS IS MUCH MORE THAN SORE. WILL POST BACK AFTER MANIPULATION

Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

Mine was sore from the injection, probably about a 3 on the 1-10 scale. I expected some pain and bruising. Doc prescribed oxycodone just in case but I didn't need it. I think every case is different, I have never heard of others who experienced major pain after the injection. I would consult with your doc to see if there was something unusual about your particular case.

Thank you all that have taken time to answer questions.

I am very worried about this disease, as my parents did not have it and nor any of their family. It has now started to appear in my feet, with the first nodules that I noticed in January.

Wach thank you for this site and I will make a donation in March.

I just do not know whether to put my trust in UK doctors or, to travel somewhere else.

I have private health insurance.

MY HAND IS BANDAGED AND MY FINGERS AND THUMB EXPOSED AN SWOLLEN. HOW LONG DID YOUR SORENESS LAST?
IT FEELS LIKE BANDAGE IS SO TIGHT. STILL PAINFUL. HAVE PUT IT IN A SLING

Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

I unwrapped mine about 2 hours after I got the injection. I had minor swelling and it just felt better without the wrapping. I did have one very small skin tear, less than 1/4" which healed in a few weeks.

Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

My hand was signifiantly swollen for about 10 days and I had bruising. After 2 weeks all the immediate side effects were gone. I felt that the finger joints of my treated hand were aching for another 2-3 months but that might have had other reasons. It went away, too.

Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

The disease might well run in the family but unnoticed. I myself probably inherited it from my mother who developed her first (and only) nodule at the age of 80.

Collagenase injection is not very difficult and there are surely several doctors in the UK with lot of experience with collagenase http://www.dupuytren-online.info/dupuytr...se_clinics.html. I recall that for example Mr. David Warwick, Hand surgeon, nearly completely converted from surgery to collagenase for treating Dupuytren's.
