Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

Dear Wach

Thank you for responding and the advice about Mr Warwick is very helpful.

My mother was 89 years when she died and died of a blood clot and her hands were very soft. Didn't even walk with a stick.

My father was a few weeks off 94 years old and he definitely did not have it.

We are a family that talks to each other a lot, so I think it likely it would have come up at some stage.

Possibilities.

2005 I was in an accident in a taxi and had a whiplash injury and was given a drug that is for epilepsy, which I took for only one month. Apparently that can trigger.

Fell in Florence in 2007 and went down into a square with a hell of a bang, fractured my ankle and elbow. The first signs were after that, with what I now know is a glass shoulder and very painful. It did go. The first nodule appeared the following year.

It maybe be the genetic combination of my parents.

I know my mother's family tree that they came from the North of Europe, the Scandinavian countries more than a thousand years ago.

Don't know my father's so far back, but he was as blond as could be with blue eyes. Funnily enough, I am blonde with green eyes.

It could be the two genetic sides combining.

Anyway, have an appointment with my GP next week and will see what he says. Hope he knows Mr Warwick and does not send me to someone who wants to do old fashioned surgery. I did show it to my GP a few years ago and he asked me to put my hand on a table and said to leave it. No mention of RT.

Anyway, thank you to everyone for responding. It is really helpful when facing this awful disease.

Let us hope Dr Charles Eaton finds a cure.

K

Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

Just looked up David Warwick who is now Professor Warwick and unfortunately he is based in Southampton and I live in Central London.

He seems to be the go to man, so I will think about it, but my health insurance will only pay if I am referred by my GP.

Surgeons Henk Giele and Harry Belcher listed on this site are also to be recommended and are closer to London than Southampton.

Thank you for your reply.

It really does help that one is not facing this alone.

WELL I TOO HAVE JUST HAD THE INJECTION FOR MY LITTLE FINGER TODAY. OK WAS PAINFUL BUT NOT FOR LONG AND ITS DONE NOW. I WAS BANDAGED AND NEED TO RETURN IN 2 DAYS. HOWEVER MY HAND IS VERY PAINFUL ALONG SIDE AND PALM AND YES I HAVE TAKEN PAIN KILLERS. NOBODY MENTIONED THIS AFTER PAIN. IS THIS COMMON?

CONSULTANT SAID MIGHT BE SORE BUT THIS IS MUCH MORE THAN SORE. WILL POST BACK AFTER MANIPULATION

Today I had manipulation under local anaesthetic. There was only one 'pop'. Dr seemed ok with this and quite matter of fact. anaesthetic hurt a little going in but manipulation not at all. Nothing was torn and my skin is still intact. Little finger much straighter than before. Large haematoma and skin around base of finger quite thick. Given a splint to wear for a week. Must remove every hour during day and make fist which is quite difficult. Finger is sore to be expected. Back next week to see OT. Will keep you posted. By the way I am in UK and I think my Dupuytrens may have been brought on when I had a bad fall about 10 years ago. I landed on my hands and was unable to use them for about 2 weeks because I had damaged tendons.

Dear Sadfam,

Interesting you think it may have been a fall as that could be the cause of mine.

Where did you have the treatment?

I am in Central London.

Best wishes and thank you to everyone posting.

Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

I found both the injections and the manipulation to be quite painful. The xiaflex burned and i counted at least 5 injections. The lidocaine injection before the manipulation was nothing, but even after numbing it up I could still feel a great deal of discomfort and struggled through the manipulation. After reading a bunch about the procedure and even watching youtube videos, I wasn't prepared for this level of pain. I think one of the problems was when they splinted me after the manipulation, the nurse had my finger too straight which put my now shortened ligaments on a constant and very uncomfortable stretch. The theory is that I've had this condition long enough that my ligament to the pinky shortened as I'm still at a 20 degree contracture without the cords. Once the custom splint was made I was no longer in this constant and painful stretch.

So anyway, I'm stuck at 20 degrees and with a pretty large nodule still so I imagine surgery is in my future.

I would see a physio (OT?). If the remaining 20 degrees is due to shortened tendons and stiff joint ligaments then physiotherapy should help.

I had my treatment and Salford Royal Hospital Manchester and was initially under Dr Naqui but as the hospital were unable to organise a clinic after 6 months they brought a locum in called Mr Chakrabarty. Well he gave me the injection, 24 hours later manipulation under local anaesthetic ( made sure i was numb) and hey presto all done. No broken skin. the only downside is under NHS would not inject other cords which i have in same hand. also have a slowly bending middle finger on my opposite hand and will have to wait until it gets worse. It will be a week tomorrow and I will be able to remove splint during the day. I have seen OT twice because i found splint uncomfortable and she made me a knew one. Little finger still lumpy on upper palm and knuckle swollen and sore on back of hand. still hurts when bending to fist but I am pleased at the moment. Not sure if I can upload photos on this site but if anyone knows how please tell me. Good luck to all who have yet to have their condition treated.

Re: Xiaflex injection finally done

That's not just NHS. Collagenase injections have generally been approved for 1 cord at a time only. Trials are under way to etend this to several cords, thus facilitating cases like yours.
