Have nodules can i exercise

I have a large plantar fibroma on my left arch and a smaller one on my right. I have gained 25 lbs in the past year ( when i quit walking for exercise) and i was already overweight. I need to lose 70 lbs and while i can lose it with diet i find at my age (47) and with my metabolism i need serious exercise to help the pounds come off. I realize i could ride bike but i miss walking my 2-4 miles a day. Im a nurse and on my feet 12 hours a day. I have found skechers go run ultra to be a god send at work for great padding but after 9 or 10 hours my feet are on fire otherwise i have little to no pain yet with the fibromas themselves unless i push on them. My question is can i go back to power walking or will i make them worse i have many years of nursing work to do so i want to make the best choices for my feet.

The more I do, the worse it gets.

If it is uncomfortable to walk on the nodule, you can get some inexpensive relief by visiting a podiatrist and having a custom insert made in the office. Bring the socks and shoes that you intend to wear while exercising.

Sorry, I can't answer the question re. whether exercise will make the nodule worse. But I do think that walking a couple of miles doesn't sound like that much, so maybe I would just try to get comfortable and do it. There's more to your overall health than just the nodule, and exercise is a good thing.

Re: Have nodules can i exercise

I developed LD in my teens. Initially this caused me difficulty with certain exercises particularly running. Doctors operated to remove the initial growth (Not knowing what it was) but it returned as a larger mass within a couple of years and by age twenty I had it in the arches of both feet.

To some extent being young helped. I was able to ignore it and push through. After running for a time I would develop pins and needles in my feet so bad that I thought I was running on blocks of wood. The LD nodules would blister. These I popped and then rubbed with methylated spirits. etc etc.

The LD has grown to a large mass in the arch of each foot and I have a new growth developing behind my toes on one foot but that has happened gradually over 45 years and does not seem to have been aggravated by exercise. If anything I think the battering I give my feet has helped to contain the disease. And since I have weighed around 240 lbs for most of that time they have had work to do. Over time LD nodules have become leathery like the balls or heals of my feet.

Now as I approach my 60th birthday I play tennis 3 times a week (2-3 hours most Saturday afternoons), I attend a gym up to 6 times a week (Including heavy weight work) and most weeks my wife and I go for a 20-30 km cycle ride on Sunday.

Seems to me that if you push through it will eventually get better. Besides giving up exercise is a greater risk to your health.

Re: Have nodules can i exercise

For me, I found the sketcher 'go walk' shoes to be awesome. They have really helped my mobility. I have a pair in every color. I had RT 6 months ago. The 2 nodules in arch have shrunk considerably. BUT it appears I have a new nodule covering the entire ball of the foot and the large toe. I do experience pins and needles. I am on amitriptyline 10 mg. This is not mind altering. It simply mask the nerve pain, the pins and needles. Without it I would be in tears. The pain unbareable. Now I am able to press on. Just as Seph mentioned it is important not to allow this condition to take you out. At first I was very very depressed. I thought I could not, should not walk, ride a bike, etc. I lived in fear that anything I did would cause the fibroma to grow. I am learning, live one day at a time. Enjoy that day to the fullest. Do what I can, use all my limbs. There are no guarantee's of what tomorrow holds.
