Cold Laser Light Therapy (red light)

I am starting a new thread on this - even though there was one thread already on laser lights and a horse linament. I don't want the horse linament part to distract - because I feel the medical grade light therapy is by far what we should focus on - so - new thread!

I've been doing this light therapy now for several months (no linament). Other therapies I've done: diet changes, no alcohol, acupuncture and massage. Diet helped hugely - but the laser light is BY FAR my best therapy to date. I basically bought a medical grade laser light on Amazon ($200) and shined the light on my poor ole hand 2x daily, for about 1 min. I also shined it on my frozen shoulder, and my tendonitis-plagued wrists of both hands. I know those are pain-related illnesses, and so not directly applicable to this forum, although its hard to separate them out...to me....its all systemic yuck. But suffice it to say: it wasn't long before me and that light were NEVER separated - I took it everywhere, and still do. Best $200 I've ever spent.

How it works: in very layman like terms, the magic of the light is similar to what happens in photosynthesis with plants. Once the light is shined on affected tissue - it stimulates the mitochondria in the cells into making energy - ATP - - re-energizing the cell, and signaling to the body that all is well (not wrong) - in that area. Well, something along those lines anyhow. In any case - your body is able to convert the light energy into chemical energy once its been absorbed. And - its - awesome! It may even be helping with my Vitamin D deficiency - who knows?

Disclosure: Unfortunately, I can't stop mixing my therapies, so I must disclose that about a month ago - I added another remedy so light is not the only thing I'm doing currently. I added DMSO/Iodide to the regimen - my formula (which I made up, so don't think its anything to copy): 1 drop Lugols iodine to 5 drops DMSO (99% pure, diluted 5-1 with distilled water), right on the palm, I let it absorb for a few minutes, then rub vigorously on the other hand to speed things up and provide some benefit to both hands "just in case" DD is even thinking about cropping up on it. And THAT too seems to be working pretty great - my nodules - ever so slightly - have shrunk!

So factually I know this: I'm pain-free, and have no further progression. Theoretically my DD may even be in remission. I don't know yet for sure. But - overall - love it.

PS - This thread is to champion Laser Light therapy - not necessarily DMSO. DMSO is not trivial, so study and careful thought is needed before trying. Neither is adding more Iodine/Iodide to your diet - but I have Hashimoto's so - I made the judgment call - for a SMALL bit more (of iodide). A little goes a long way, and you can invoke more harm than good with some of these more chemical-based therapies - so, caution!

But the light? No way. Let it shine!

Re: Cold Laser Light Therapy (red light)

Hi all - update on red laser light. I still use it religiously - it has helped me in so many ways, but I cannot say for certain how it works with DD other than the DD progression has stopped entirely. I can't say because it's impossible to know if that is because of the light, or just may be it's just 'how it is' and my body just stopped on its own. I cannot say.

Other statistics of interest: I'm a woman, 50 - early signs of the disease at age 47-ish. When the nodules appeared, I had severe tendonitis, and I was drinking about 2 glasses of wine a night. I quit drinking, did about 5 months of hard-core acupuncture which helped the tendonitis, did a short term of iodide/DMSO straight onto the nodule (I do neither any more).

Now all I do for therapy is adhere to the sugar/alcohol restrictions, and shine my beloved red-light every night. In this interesting year of my life I would say I've gone from disabling and career-ending pain and disability (I could barely type messages in this forum, much less the documents I needed to type for work - I had to hold a pencil in my fist and tap straight down on keys), to typing again fast and furious pain-free, my tendonitis is gone totally - I still bear the hard evidence of my disease with a couple of hard knots, some dimpling, and a long and scary looking chord of collagen - but no contracture...I'll keep on trucking, so far, so good.

Hi Fitzelder,
Can you give me more info on the laser light? I am very interested but want to shorten my search.

Thanks,

Re: Cold Laser Light Therapy (red light)

Hi everyone. I was just diagnosed with this horrible illness and I have pain in my thumb and a nodule on my palm. I'm a 38 yr old Greek Female. I believe rock climbing made this appear faster. I have red light therapy for free at my gym at planet Fitness and it has already helped after one session. My hands feel less stiff. It can't hurt!! Do it!!!

Re: Cold Laser Light Therapy (red light)

Sorry if I don't do this right but was diagnosed with DD and I was thinking of using my Baby Quasar (which is red light) on my palms but was concerned because when I bought it for my face, it says it was supposed to build up collagen and I thought that is not what we want on the cords or nodules. Any help would be appreciated. I am not in contracture but I am always thinking about this now and I am emotional. I am reading about radiotherapy and I see pros and cons. Any information on that would be appreciated.

Hi Shoney

I don’t think there’s much information or consensus on using light at different wavelengths to treat DD. It’s hard to see how red light can penetrate the skin with sufficient energy to do anything. Lasers and other lower energy light sources are used in the treatment of various skin conditions and tendon related injuries, but again there are as far as I know no definitive studies around DD. Did you see this paper for example https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4126803/ which probably does not help. Try your devices modestly and see if it helps, but be cautious.

RT is useful for a specific active phase of DD when it may stop or slow progression. It helps 80% or more if done at the right time. It is not a general preventative however so do not consider treatment unless you have ongoing symptoms with recent changes. There are lots of threads on the forum about RT and you can view the website pages http://www.dupuytren-online.info/radiation_therapy.html.

Best wishes

Re: Cold Laser Light Therapy (red light)

Thank you so much. I posted the question also on the Facebook forum. Since new to this, I was under the impression we don't want collagen built up in the palms and my red light machine called Baby Quasar builds up collagen. I even read to stop taking Glucosamine for that reason. But I am glad I found people to help me. I do tend to over research stuff and it gets me depressed. I just have one nodule that is sensitive and other lumps that don't bother me. I also was told not to work out and use Dumbbells but I don't want my life to change drastically. Working out is how I stay in shape. I will get some padded gel workout gloves but I am only talking about five pound Dumbbells.

Hi fitzelder,
Light therapy is the process of using blue light irradiation on an affected part of the body. This is a treatment that is still yet to be tested on a Dupuytren’s patient; however, research suggests that it may help advance way of treating Dupuytren's contracture.
Here are some basic treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture disease options:
*Surgery may be required depending on the severity of the condition. The doctor may cut an incision into the affected area or use a hypodermic needle to part, move or divide the diseased tissue present in hand.
*Enzyme injections may also be used as they are very helpful in weakening the cord. The doctor may then physically manipulate your hand to break the cord.
*Corticosteroids, or steroids, are injections used to reduce inflammation in the patient. They slow down the progress of the contractures, which brings relief and reduces symptoms.
*Splints are devices that are used to provide support to the affected area, and they are most effective when used after surgery.
I hope this information will helpfull for you.

How to know which Lazer light is right to purchase, in terms of device specs? Thank you.
