Re: Dr. Eaton Closing His Practice

Randy - Thanks for your clarification about the comparison between NA and OS. I can appreciate what you're saying after 14 NA's and only one (never again) open surgery - ridiculous amount of hassle, pain, time spent in hand therapy and expense for a result that only be described as "meh". The finger was completely closed to the palm and opinions from Drs Eaton and Zidel said NA was no longer going to do the trick (boutonniere deformity complicating the situation). The result looked good for about 6 months - you should see what the little beast look likes now! If I had it do over, I'd have cut off the pinky and be done with it. Kristen

I totally agree with MoonDanc - that there is nothing simple about this procedure. I have had NA about 14 times now (both hands, very aggressive). I started back in 1999 with Drs Badois, Lellouche, Lermusiaux and happily moved on to Dr. Eaton, who was only 40 miles away. As was said, Dr. Eaton's technique and procedures improved over the years - I even discussed that with him on my last visit (and yes, I was devastated at the closing of his practice).

While I didn't have the negative experience MoonDanc had with someone tearing up my hand, I only was treated by doctors who had done LOTS of NA. They were all terrific, but I'm convinced Dr. Lermusiaux could have done it in his sleep - he seemed to be having some kind of zen experience as he looked to the sky while prodding the cords before he decided where to saw. I don't want anyone sawing a needle in my hand unless they have a lot of practice. I have an appointment next week with Dr. Diaz who took over Dr. Eaton's practice - onward and upward. Kristen

I'm didn't get the feeling the experience I had with the other NA doc was any different from what is normal for him and he's a highly regarded NA doc. Perhaps it had to do with lots of scar tissue from Xiaflex and prior NA and he was taking an agressive approach??? I couldn't get him to schedule NA on my other hand--it was quite strange and I don't know why--and of course, I'm now glad I decided to go back to Dr. Eaton.

Please post and let us know your experience with Dr. Diaz--if he/she took over Dr. Eaton's practice, I wonder why they weren't recommending him/her? I'm also extremely curious why Dr. Eaton did not gravitate to Xiaflex-- I believe he only used it once and I'm really curious about the new Xiaflex trials--are they now using double the dose? Is anyone aware of other long-time NA docs who don't use Xiaflex?

Jeez, I thought my DD was agressive--all 8 fingers--6 or so NAs (I've lost count), Xiaflex and RT on both hands-- you've had 14, I just cannot imagine continuing this every 1.5 to 2 years.

Best,
Moondanc

So please understand, my comment was strictly in comparison between NA and OS from the surgeon's perspective. And I'd have to say from the patients' as well. It's like comparing open heart surgery to angioplasty. I don't think I overstated the difference. I personally have had both.

Thanks, Randy, for clarification. I totally agree and still wish folks were more aware of NA. It's certainly nothing to be afraid of esp. considering OS and even Xiaflex injection, manipulation and arm swelling reactions. I'd take it over Xiaflex any day especially given my experience and others I've spoken with on the squishy requirements and measurements taken in the followup studies on Xiaflex and the half dozen patients I've spoken with who definitely feel Xiaflex made there disease worse.
