How important is a diagnosis?

Hello!

Over the past two years, (I am 53), I have grown two nodes in the middle of my palm, a pit above one of them and what appears to be another nodule forming, or it could be that one of my nodules is growing towards my wrist. For a couple of weeks, that new area has felt tender and itches at times, as well as feeling a little tight when I open my palm fully.

My question is, how important is a diagnosis? My mother, a nurse, has DD and says that I have DD. But I live in the mountains of Mexico, and whenever I have showed it to doctors here, they say that it is just fat deposits and nothing to worry about. Should I try to find another doctor? Am I hurting myself if I don't get treatment? I just found this site and am thrilled to be able to do some research and talk to others.

Thank you for your help,
Laura

Hi Laura

There can be a few different reasons for lumps in the hand and palm. I myself have a self diagnosed nodule in the palm that is in fact a ganglion. Irrespective of what it is you will need a diagnosis to have the appropriate treatment for whatever it is. A proper diagnosis would give some indication of what to expect and help you plan your future course of treatment. Without that you are just guessing on how things might develop, and may not give you time to investigate the best treatment and find the doctors available to you in the future if the condition worsens rapidly.

I was going to comment on your description of the nodules and pits but really it's not worth giving an opinion.

Best wishes

Re: How important is a diagnosis?

Hi,

Thanks for your advice. I think I always knew that I needed a diagnosis. I guess a better question would be How soon should I get that diagnosis, and who do I see to get a diagnosis? I'm thinking that I may need to go back to the states to do this and am wondering if I can wait till my usual holiday trip home? I mean, is there any harm in waiting to get a diagnosis?
