any experiences with steroids?

hi, i am 47 male and have dup's nodules on the palm of my rh, no contractions. I have been reading much on this site, and i am leaning towards radiation therapy or cortisone or both.
i have been cross fit training for the past 2-3 years and believe this has been possibly triggered by kettle-bell, boxing, pull-ups, etc.
Anyone who has had cortisone and or RT please post your thoughts.
thanks

Re: any experiences with steroids?

There's not much, if any evidence, of steroid injections helping long term other than some immediate pain relief and reduction of inflammation.

There's a lot of evidence, start on this site, that radiotherapy slows or halts progression in the majority of cases.

Start protecting your hands, gloves, taping, equipment, etc.

Re: any experiences with steroids?

Thanks, i have already contacted the center in Hamburg and i'm waiting for response. I started using gel padded gloves today which made a huge difference in that there was absolutely no friction on the palm while performing the exercises.

Re: any experiences with steroids?

I had a steroid shot (cortisone) and then RT. My DD was progressing so quickly that I felt like contracture was going to occur before I could get RT done. I had a cord and it was just starting to draw down the middle finger. Since I was in so much pain, I had a cortisone shot. The shot stopped the progression for about 4 weeks, then the DD started up again. I had RT about 2 weeks later. That shot is extremely painful. Tears almost came to my eyes, and I moaned. My hand felt fine for about 2-3 hours and then it became very painful and my fingers clinched into a fist that was impossible to open. At around midnight my hand opened and felt great. The side effects scared me. I would not have another cortisone shot unless my hand was beginning to contract and I could not begin RT for awhile. It did buy me time and for that I am grateful. But it was painful and did not stop the DD progression.

Re: any experiences with steroids?

The steroid injections that I had into nodules 3 + years ago little finger and palm and middle finger of opposite hand 1 + plus years ago..really helped..nodules are much smaller and softer. As far as pain...not too bad ....but like all shots and procedures it all depends on experience and technique ....Doctor Eaton did mine...and he will be the only one that will ever do it again if needed..he is the best.

i have an appointment with Dr Eaton end of month, and i have also emailed the doc in Hamburg for the RT. Did you have contraction when you had the shot? and did you get RT and what are your thoughts on RT?
Thanks

Re: any experiences with steroids?

nicolaos,

It has been about 3 years since my last round of RT. I was just starting to have contraction when I had RT. I had a cord starting at the base of my middle finger and going down my palm toward my wrist. I had puckering at the base of my middle finger that was caused by the cord. So far so good, no progression of DD in that hand since the RT. I had the most improvement after the 2nd round of RT. I had RT done near Charlotte, NC.

My hand is great. I have regained most of the strength back in it. I can once again open jars, grasp and I taking up tennis and golf again. I wasn't aware of how DD weakened my hand until I had difficulty doing minor things like chopping or using a knife. I have to say that even though the DD stopped it took a long time for my hand to come back to "normal". A year after RT, I still had difficulty using that hand to grasp or handle a screw driver, etc.. As time progressed it became easier and easier and now when I am working or gardening I don't even think of my DD. My hand does not get tired and I can do almost everything I could before DD. I do not abuse it, I wear padded biking gloves when working in the yard, building things, or doing anything that would put pressure on that cord. Golf and tennis are awkward because of that glove. I am very fortunate that RT is working.

Re: any experiences with steroids?

Steroids have long been known to damage tendon tissue and this showed up first with athletes. I had an injection for a rotator cuff tear and the injection removed the pain so well that I soon reinjured the same area as I had no pain for feedback.

General practitioners reach for steroids as a knee jerk reaction and it is usually the wrong course of action. I learned a long time ago that with muscle or similar injuries or problems to go to a sports medicine practitioner. Neither group is going to have any knowledge of Dupuytren's.

My own GP is an excellent doctor and his father has Dupuytren's but I had to educate him on the nature of the disease and the options for treatment.
