Dr. in Seattle

Do we yet have a surgeon that does NA treatment in the Seattle area?
Today I called a hand surgery center in Seattle and they didn't seem to know what I was talking about.

Re: Dr. in Seattle

Is a ten-hour drive considered Seattle?

I made the drive from Puyallup to Boise, ID last Thursday (they are only open Thursday and Friday) to go here:

The GP and hand and foot specialist (Dupuytren & Lederhosen) in the Puget Sound area all said wait until you are really bad and get an operation, and looked at me as if I were crazy when I asked about radiation treatment.

Kline seems inclined to a more aggressive approach, and shot me up with steroids and is hooking me up with someone at Virginia Mason for radiation. Also they got me a good hotel rate in Boise.

Re: Dr. in Seattle

Badchess,
Thanks for answering, hope you get fixed up.
What did he say about NA ? I am primarily interested in the needle fasciotomy quick and dirty, fast healing, cheaper and easier than fasciectomy.
How involved is your dc?
Thanks again,
Ray

Re: Dr. in Seattle?

Hello all,

I am a 44. I discovered foot nodules about 6 months ago. I think the best I can say is that I have gotten shrugs and wear good shoes in trying to get help from the doctors I have shown. I am now realizing that I have some nodules in my hands too. I read someone else mention that they did have pain from early on. I do not think I need surgery but I would like to stop these growths.

So I am back to the Seattle question of what doc to see just to even get referred in the right direction. Does anyone have Ledderhose also and had good experiences with a doctor? Also did you have pain and if you tried radiation did it help even with pain?

Is the best way to start to call Dr Kline and go to Portland? I am up for that if it is the best way to go.

Thanks in advance for any replies and if you have info you don't want to post on the board I am willing to pass on my email.

Re: Dr. in Seattle

Amy,

I have DD in my hand not in my foot at this point. I had Rt and it did stop the pain. I had quite a bit of pain from my shoulder to my hand. After the second round of RT all the pain went away. My hand continued to improve and the only symptoms I have now (3 years later) is a little tightness in the hand when the winter comes on. That tightness could be because of arthritis or the DD. Who knows.

Re: Dr. in Seattle

AmyD,

Dr. Christine Cha at the Oregon Clinic: Radiation Oncology Department at Providence Hospital in Portland for the RT. She is familiar with DC and has done this RT before. Her phone number is 503-215-6029. I had RT there and did not see Dr. Kline.

Ledderhose Disease can be interesting and unpredictable. I had nodules 15 years ago that were painful if stressed (walking up stairs barefoot, climbing ladders etc.). The last 10 years I do not know they exist. No pain or anything except if I do something out of the ordinary. I have been careful in choosing shoes but mostly I wear Nike shoes. All of my other dress shoes are fine, also.

Re: Dr. in Seattle

Amy, I live in Anacortes. I too have Dupuytrens in both hands & Ledderhosen in both feet, I'm 48 years old. I got the run around just like most of the people on this forum. I actually educated a doctor friend of mine on this disease. No one around here wanted to do radiation on my hands and feet (they all wanted me to wait so they could mangle my hands/feet with a knife), I convinced my friend to entertain the idea, he found a radiologist in Sedro-Woolley to perform the radiology. That was almost 2 years ago, the nodules in my hands and feet quit growing (in fact have shrink) and they no longer hurt and itch. I work with my hands, outside most of the day, and I run a lot. It was important for me to keep my hands and feet functioning as long as possible.
My Doctors name is Robert Jacobsen and he practices in Burlington Washington, only an hour drive north of Seattle. I recommend you make an appointment to see him. He can make you an appointment to see Dr. Muff in Sedro-Woolley (http://www.vitals.com/doctors/Dr_Robert_Jacobsen.html)

Good Luck Terry Sentinella

Re: Dr. in Seattle

That seems to be inappropriate language to describe Dupuytren's procedures and Drs. You said, "they all wanted me to wait so they could mangle my hands/feet with a knife".

Re: Dr. in Seattle

Callie, I'm sorry if I offended you by calling it mangling, but I have seen the aftermath of the surgery, that is what it is, no sugar coating the facts.
My uncle had surgery on his hand to remove cords, and I have a very good friend that has had both of his hands cut on twice, his feet are next!!!! Their hands are not the same after the surgery, yes the cords were removed, but they are growing back, and they have nerve damage from the surgeries. I still feel anytime doctors cut on hands and feet it isn't good. I personally will try every alternative to surgery first!!!!!!!! I have it in both hands, both feet, 4 knuckles, and I don't know what is next. NO SURGERY FOR ME!!!

Re: Dr. in Seattle

It is too bad that your experience has tainted your value of surgery for Dupuytren's. I had surgery on my hand for Dupuytren's and it couldn't have been more successful. That was 11 years ago and my hand is as good as it was before the surgery, zero contracture and no other problems.

I wouldn't have surgery on the Ledderhose Disease that I have, but I wouldn't suggest that doctors would be trying to "mangle" me if they suggested surgery.

It didn't "offend" me. I thought it "offended" the procedures and the Drs. you reference. Do you consider heart surgeons trying to "mangle" people by performing heart surgery? Or surgery for cancer? Dupuytren's surgery is very minor compared to most other surgeries.
