female Just diagnosed

Went to family doctor for what I thought was ganglion cyst in my palm. He told me it is DD. I have an appt. this week with hand-ortho dr. I had researched DD and felt I didn't fit any criteria: male, heredity, contractions, etc. I am female, age 63. Since have found my sister has it also. We both just have nodules and a few cords, but no contractor. My largest nodule does cause some discomfort. Guess I'll keep my dr. appt, though he won't be able to do anything right now. Just want to get on his books for the future. My sister and I also have a place right under the second toe that is uncomfortable. Don't know if that means anything. I guess we are in for a few years of the unknown. Thanks for having this place to learn from others.

Re: female Just diagnosed

Hi J K Day
I too am a 63 year old female and was diagnosed with Dupuytren's last week by a specialist. I first noticed it 5 months ago, went to my doctor because the lumps were painful. I have it in my left hand only, but was told that I will probably get it in my other hand as well. My doctor sent me to a specialist of hands to comfirm the disease and if and when I will need treatment.
I have no one in the family with the disease, or know of any of my family in the past to have the disease. i DO NOT have epilepsy, diabetes or an alcoholic; in fact I am very healthy and physically active. The only common factor is genetic as my ancestors are English and one Grandfather from North Germany.
I play golf, tennis, swim, work out in the gym, so may find that these activities will be difficult later. I find some simple tasks painful, e.g. Clapping hands, opening doors with turning handles, changing gears in the car etc.(use left hand because I live in Australia). You are not alone.

Re: female Just diagnosed

Hi, I am fairly newly diagnosed also and also live in Australia. I am 50 year old male with no real contracture but noticing weakness. No family history of the condition, but I worked with my hands as a mechanic for 15 years so maybe there was injury type cause there? Can't use chopsticks anymore (no, I am Caucasian not asian descent) and even when using knife to butter toast notice weakness. Haven't heard of this before, anyone got any comments?
Also is the needle aponeurotomy available in Australia?
Thanks,
Tomo
