Re: Gabapentin and Dupuytrens is it safe?

Sorry, want to clarify one of my statements. I also do not feel that the vaccine would cause DD, but could arouse it, like other factors.

I spent some time reading through what the CDC (Center for Disease Control) has to say about Shingles and the vaccine. I think it is well worth reading and considering the possible pros and cons of the vaccine for those with DD. Not sure after what I read if I had known I had DD if I would receive the vaccine during an active phase of this disease. There are a lot of hard calls out there for us to individually make. This is a great Forum to get us thinking and researching what is best for each of us.

I've taken a brief look at the guidelines and need to study them further although it's too late-- I got the vaccine when it first came out. However, I wonder if you could share the particular parts of the cons that concern you?

Thanks,
Diane

Re: Gabapentin and Dupuytrens is it safe?

Hello,

I have now spoke with three (3) podiatrist and the chemist at the compound pharmacy. All had the same story regarding gabapentin and LD/DD.

All have said Gabapentin is an epileptic but not in the way the others are. And if this medication has helped the pain then I should continue the use of it without the worry.

I have also sent an email to Prof S. his reply was. Since I have not examine your hands then I cannot give determination. However if this is helping ease your pain than you should continue its use.

Another question to those who have ledderhose
Do, did, or have you experience itching in the arch of your foot?

I want to thank everyone for their input. Having this site helps to know I am not alone. Its great to be able to compare how this affects others and what they do to help them along.

Hello Potter

No apology necessary. I appreciate your input. It has put me on a massive search. And although all have lined up with each other I still am leery as this is such a nasty disease.
I keep experiencing itching in the arch of my foot. Concern this mean a growth spurt in the 3 tiny bumps that have formed Before I began down the gabapentin road

Hi Diane,

My concern would lie in one the fact that there is still no clear evidence as to how people get Dupuytren's, and that some would say that it is an autoimmune condition. In the CDC's basic information on who should get the vaccine and who should not there is the statement "...or another disease that affects the immune system." I also read a very comprehensive report titled: Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) that went into more detail.

That link: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5705a1.htm

I know that for me regardless if DD is an autoimmune condition or not, what is taking place in my body is not a normal, healthy anything. But, I also knew at the time I was vaccinated I had a real fear of getting the Shingles based upon observing what my dad went through. So, despite the fact that the vaccine does not guarantee I won't still get the Shingles the reduction in odds was worth to me. Honestly have no idea now with having DD if I would make the same decision.

Hope that helps clarify things a bit,

Nan

Re: Gabapentin and Dupuytrens is it safe?

My understanding of this ... certain vaccines are made with live viruses. Shingles is one of those. So when you get the shingles vaccine, they are actually injected you with a very small amount of the virus. That will then activate your immune system. When that happens your immune systems attacks the shingles virus and creates a level of antibodies against the virus. That will help your body suppress the virus next time it tries to become active.

If you have an autoimmune disease, your immune system is already compromised. So when you are exposed to any type of illness it's more difficult for your body to fight off that illness. Your immune system just isn't working up to par. Due to that fact, you have to be careful when taking any vaccine that uses a live virus. Receiving a vaccine that contains a live virus will mean that you have a higher chance of actually contracting the disease you're being vaccinated against. Does that make sense?

I have systemic lupus. My immune system is compromised. I have to carefully weigh the pros and cons if I want to receive a vaccination.

Re: Gabapentin and Dupuytrens is it safe?

Jolene:
Hello Vonmae,

Are you still taking Gabapentin? If not, how long after you stop gabapentin did you notice DD & LD?

Thanks for the reply. I tried not to take gabapentin last night and I was in such pain that took it again.
I am having intense tingle, burning, pins & needles on one foot. It started around week 7 after first round of RT on that foot.

I was prescribed Gabapentin for severe nerve pain after breaking my wrist. I took it for less than a month. Not quite a year later I developed the first nodules in the injured hand and was diagnosed with DD. I have looked for studies on this and found very little other than slight correlations, but who knows? Lack of evidence is not evidence of no association. It just means few studies have been done

BTW, don't stop Gabapentin suddenly. It is very important to wean yourself off gradually under a doctor's supervision. If you stop taking it too fast it can cause problems.

Hope you feel better.
