Has there been any research into the effectiveness of hand therapy after NA? I gather that some doctors don't recommend it, while others employ hand therapists to supply splints and advise on therapy. Can anyone tell me the therapy that Dr Meinel advised them? One forum contributor mentioned sitting on one's hand on a soft cushion for the first 10 days. They neglected to say how long to sit in this way however. I'm due for NA in two weeks and was told to find my own hand therapist. How do you find a good one who won't do more harm than good? When I was first diagnosed I was sent to a therapist who designed a very expensive night splint that was more like an instrument of torture and made comfortable sleep impossible. I don't want another therapist who is so out of touch with patients' needs. Few doctors seem to be up to date on Dupuytrens and I suspect that many therapists are the same. Can anyone help? Also can someone supply a photo of their silicon night splint post NA so I can try to have that replicated.
Sorry I can't help answer your question as I have no personal experience of it, but can I suggest you read my posting in "Other Therapies" > Re: DUPUYTREN's CONTRACTURE - A Simple Remedy - Massage, Ginger and Knowledge.
I believe the remedy will assist you pre and after NA though I would recommend you hold off for at least 2 days prior to and at least a day or 2 after the procedure if you are bleeding - reason for this being that Fresh Ginger Root improves blood flow and therefore the slight possibility of bleeding - if you are on and blood thinning medication (including Aspirin) I would suggest you do consult with your Dr prior for the same reason given.
You probably should consult on this with your Dr in respect of using the remedy after the procedure but I see no reason not to try the remedy prior - You might even notice significant benefits pre NA especially if you do it more often than I recommend in my post (as much as 6-8 times daily)
One think I believe the splints might assist with, though uncomfortable, is in helping to improve blood flow, especially at the joints, for the duration the splints are in place - this being apart from attempting to assist in straightening out your fingers, which I believe is the main reason the splints are recommended.
Hopefully others can answer your question more directly - I wish you the best of luck with your procedure.

Thank you Spanish Buddha. Yes, I did see that posting, particularly the one by Newman who described splints made by Dr Meinel. Dr Meinel's YouTube video is very encouraging so I'd like to make a splint according to his recommendations. I've sent a private message to Newman hoping he will send photos of his splint because I find the directions in his post a little hard to visualise. I haven't found any threads that deal specifically with the best post NA hand therapy.
After my very successful N.A. procedures Dr. Eaton provided me with scripts for hand splints...I had them made by a C.H.T. I have them replaced each year ..ins covers it. I wear the spints at night...since 2009 ...all still good ...
No P.T. was ever mentioned by that wonderful Dr. just suggested nothing strenuous for a while..and remove band aids next day I believe...

A (compressed) copy of the slide attached, shown at the recent Groningen conference, for the discussion on splinting, may/may not help?
Thank you BrianB. It's good to know that Dr Eaton didn't recommend hand therapy after NA. Thank you Spanish Buddha for the slide. It was helpful in showing the silicon part of the splint. I've managed to find how to make that part out of Otoform K2. Now I'm hoping someone has a photo that includes how the splint is held in place firmly and comfortably overnight. Thank you both for your quick and helpful responses.

Mine is held on with Velcro. As I can tighten or loosen for comfort, for wear at night. It's made from a soft plexie form heated to the shape of my 2 fingers and Palm. I also have a spring splint purchased online. Wear it during the day and can use the spring to exercise the fingers to build up strength at the same time the spring holds the fingers straight as it allows the joints to bend.

Send pics tomorrow . Good nite!
Here are the pics of my night splint held by velcro in black front and back pics, made with flexi foam. Very comfortable. The day spring splint front side pic in white foam very tough stuff and washable. I even garden with spring splint on, which builds strength in joints ( spring movable design) and keeps the fingers from contracting during the day. I have a spring splint for all 4 fingers. Right now my DD is in active mode.
You can order spring splints online by size measure your fingers and they are custom made. I luv...luv... Luv..them! You can also order flexi foam and custom make your own night splint ! Splint advocate! Hope this helps. Cherise
