If its Dups, why does it hurt so much?

Dr thinks I have stage 0 Dupuytren's.

I first started getting a lump on my left palm - noticed it because it hit the steering wheel when driving (I now have a padded steering wheel cover) - probably 2 years ago. It is a constant source of pain. It aches (burns) and itches and if banged, really is very painful for quite a while. Weather changes seem to affect it also - cold and damp make it ache more. The lump is a wee bit bigger than when I first noticed it but not significantly bigger..I have no obvious involvement of the cord along that finger...just a hard disc that is moveable if palpated over the top of the MCP joint. I have no dimpling or drawing of the skin - it's only obvious there is a lump under there if I bend my fingers back (which I have no trouble doing at this point) or if the palm is touched.

From what I understand, most Dups lumps do not cause significant pain. Is the amount of pain I have a sign that this is NOT Dups? or am I just wimpy??

I was quite encouraged to see the info on radiation therapy and will be forwarding it to my Dr to see if I can convince her to look into it.

Hi Casuzen:

Contrary to what many people's doctors seem to tell them, a lot of folks with DD (including your's truly) do find some pain attendant to the disease.

My skin ramp and lump hurt sometimes too. If I grab the steering wheel or wrench or lathe handle, it hurts enough to stop. I've taken some good pictures if anyone would like to share info.

My DD has not limited my finger extension at all... yet.

But one can clearly see the skin curling around under the lump. You would think one could just stretch it out but I was advised not to irritate it as it could make it worse.

Where did you hear that stretching the fingers could make it worse? I have been using splints every night for almost two years, hoping it would slow the progression. My condition improved so much that when I traveled to Switzerland for needle aponevrotomy, I was told that I was no longer a candidate for treatment. I continued with ths splints until two weeks ago when I decided as an experiment to stop them for two weeks. My contracture was 20 degrees two weeks ago. Now it's 90 degrees. If any research has been done on the effects of stretching or splints, I'd like to see it.

I take it you are going back to the splints then, if I read this right? I try to keep my hands flexible and do stretch my fingers backwards..not sure if I should...

I have been experimenting this week...I have this herbal oil that I got for migranes...was rubbing it on my temples and noticed..oddly...that my hands did not hurt as much...so I have been using it 3 or 4 times a day, massaging it into my palms by rubbing them together until my skin is warm and wow...the right hand does not hurt at all unless I press really hard and the left is not quite as painfree, but then that's where the big lumpy stuff is...its not softening the lump that I can tell but its sure a relief to not hurt when I pick something up or drive or make a fist. The oil has lavendar, peppermint, soy, grapeseed and arnica in it...no idea which one or if it's the combination that is helping...and I have no idea if this is going to continue to work or if its a fluke (I hope its NOT!)

Effect of night splint

A very interesting observation! Based on your experience a comfortable night splint might be a suitable solution for some of us. Actually one the members of Dupuytren Society started the same experiment a couple of months ago and your experience is very encouraging. The only downside is that one might need to wear the night splint forever. May I ask how old you are?

effect of massage

It might be that the content of the oil you are using is not relevant and that it is rather the massaging 3-4 times per day itself that improves your condition. A hand surgeon told us about a patient who refused surgery and started to massage his cords for daily for hours (while watching TV) with a wooden ball. After two months and much to the surprise of the hand surgeon the cords were reduced and the extension deficit had become less. He said that the cords eventually nearly disappeared. Your massaging might work in the same direction. But that's only speculation! Maybe you want to keep doing it and even intensify it? Please share your results with us!

Re: If its Dups, why does it hurt so much?

The splinting works! I have been night-splinting since I had the second NA on my left middle finger - and I have had no increase in the degree of contracture. After the first NA, I only splinted for a month - and the contracture returned with a vengence!

I think it especially is beneficial if you have PIP involvement - the knuckle is definately red in the morning, and you can see where the splint strained against the finger during the night.

BTW, Wal-Mart sells very good, cheap metal splints :)

Re: If its Dups, why does it hurt so much?

I am newly diagnosed, female age 63. My nodule hurts most of the time, especially driving, opening a twist top on a jar, etc. Right now my wrist and shoulder are hurting. I'm beginning to think I have carpal tunnel also. Have any of you had the combination?

To JKday: Dupuytren can occasionally cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or similar pain. You might also have a look at

http://www.dupuytren-online.info/IPP_and_others.html

which describes diseases (other than the well known Ledderhose disease) that are potentially related to Dupuytren.
