Radiation Therapy for 30 yr old male?

I am a 30 year old Canadian with Dupuytren. A year or two ago a saw a doctor in my city and he said to wait until it gets bad and then have surgery. So I believed him until now. Everything I'm reading here leans towards trying other treatments. There seems to be limited radiation treatments in Canada. I'm considering trying to get a referral from my GP to go to Toronto to have to procedure done. Is there any downside to getting RT at my age of 30? I have nodules in both hands but I do not have any contracture happening yet. From everything I'm reading it seems to be a good time to try RT while I'm still in early stages. Does anyone have any experience with RT at my age?

Thank you for taking the time to respond!

Re: Radiation Therapy for 30 yr old male?

Hi from Australia. Do you feel that the disease is Active as Radiotherapy is best only when the disease is Active then only on nodules and not on cords ! Do you feel symptoms taking place under the skin for example -funny feelings itchiness etc as this is the best time to have RT treatment/ I went to Germany and had RT from Prof Seegenschmiedt who is fluent in English and has compassion for patients with Dupuytrens. Great Guy. If I were in your shoes I would email him as ask his advice as you are young and seek his opinion. He is on the Medical Advisory Board of this Society. Regards.

Re: Radiation Therapy for 30 yr old male?

I was also diagnosed at age 30. Personally, I wouldn't wait until it needs surgery, but I would hold off having radiation therapy as long as possible if there are no cords/a contracture. The problem is that you never know if it will develop into a contracture so you would never need RT or surgery - or you may have additional nodules that show up over time, so when you do radiation you can do them all at one time. I did RT on a nodule and then a few months later had a few more appear that could have been done all at once (I broke my hand and it activated the disease.) I've had RT five times (including RT for cancer @ age 28) and it is very effective and treating Dupuytren's. I still worry about the long term risk - no matter how low the risk with this low of a dose of radiation.

Feel free to PM if you have additional questions.
