hi kiwi s

Hi kassie
I hope you are feeling well after your treatment......many people experience ups and downs on the radiated area for several months after RT.......in my case ....I experienced significant soreness and tightening......this was never problem though.....it took a year before everything loosened up...

I have fairly aggressive LD in both feet and early stage DD in both hands......only my feet have been radiated at this stage.....one of my feet has developed 2 new nodules in the radiated area which is disappointing......despite this I have no regrets travelling to Germany for the treatment.....I am considering having the new nodules radiated in the future.....but I am not panicking

My feet are more functional and far less sore than they were before treatment......this is why I consider my treatment successful...

Wishing you the best

Gazza

Re: Radiation therapy in New Zealand

Hello all.

I just wanted to give a update on the advice and actions I have taken. I am fortunate in that my symptoms have halted naturally (so far), after they got to the point where I have noticeable knots on each hand but only slight impairment on my right hand. They both hurt at times. This was first diagnosed when I was 34, in 2010. I am a pianist so this was quite concerning when it first appeared.

I was referred by my GP in Wellington to see Mr Marcus Bisson, who is a specialist in Dupytren’s. He was aware of the oncological treatment studies. His sage advice was that I should wait before seeking treatment, for the following reasons:

1) If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Dupytren's can be triggered by trauma. This includes surgery and possibly other treatments too. It is probable that my Dupytren's was triggered by a nasty broken wrist that happened about 18 months before my diagnosis.

2) The risk of cancer. While this may be slight, the studies haven’t really proven the risk level over the length of someone’s lifetime. Mr Bisson pointed out that most oncology treatment in general is done on people in their later years, and that often some other form of illness ends their life before any long term cancer could form and be detected. For someone who was in their mid 30s, that was worth considering.

My decision was to carefully monitor my symptoms, to avoid trauma (such as rock climbing and even applauding heavily at the theatre), and to seek therapy if the symptoms got worse.

Hope that helps. I guess we all make our own choices based on our own condition and the advice we get. Really glad that this forum exists to help circulate these ideas though. All the best. I know I will be back to this site if / when things change.

Warwick./

Hi all, reporting again , my apologies for not doing it earlier, got very busy. First to clarify: yes, I was prescribed 7 sessions over two weeks, 3 Gy per session or overall 21 Gy for the one single treatment. Thank you Lanod, for prompting my to make sure I know. I am having the last treatment today. Felt a bit tired during the week but not sure whether it was the therapy or something else. However the therapists confirmed that other patients had complained of tiredness as well. Otherwise no negative symptoms, and I definitely feel that i can stretch the palm more easily than before. I took a photo after the first two treatments, will take one tomorrow, and then regularly. And will report back here on what is happening. The radiation therapists at Auckland Hospital are an excellent team, very efficient (I never had to wait , the treatment always started on time) yet considerate and friendly, and doing everything possibe to make you feel comfortable. I felt I had to share this too. They were also interested to know more about it as it was a new form of treatment with only a few patients treated so far. Thanks again to every one for sharing, without the forum I would have never known about radiation therapy as a viable option.
Hi all, my progress report. About 10 days after radiation therapy. Hand functions so much better, the problem is to be a bit more gentle on it and not to overuse as it starts to hurt , I did some gardening and that was perhaps wrong. The cord
and the nodule still there. Have a follow up appointment with Dr Benjamin in early January, I guess by that time it will be really clear whether or not the therapy had an effect, in the short term. For the lb term will gave to wait.

6 weeks after RT - 'a 'burnt' effect

Hi all, i was very busy the whole month and did not report regularly as i planned to but may be there is no need to. About three weeks after the RT something provoked a strong burn effect on the palm, the whole area that was treated became red, itchy and very sensitive (it could be exposure to sun, or a chemical that have triggered this - most likely the sun, it was unusually hot and sunny here in December).

The whole rectangular was red and sore, even the top of my hand was slightly pigmented. It took me some toe to realize what was happening, and to identify the correct cream to moisturize it (Neutrogena regularly, and Aveeno from time to time). Still need to moisturize it regularly, and also to were a silk glove when driving and generally out in the sun but it is much less sensitive and and is not a problem.

Otherwise my hand functions much better, feels almost fully restored ; only when i try some really hard pull in the garden or similar i feel tightness and tension, as if something is going to break. So no gardening and heavy lifting for the time being http://www.dupuytren-online.info/Forum_E...smilies/sad.gif . The nodule itself has flattened a bit but has not disappeared and the cord is still visible.

I am going to see the specialist in early January . I decided not to see a doctor when the 'burn' started as the radiation therapists at the hospital warned me to be careful, not to expose the palm to the sun, and to use appropriate moisturizers but apparently i was not careful enough. Happy New year to all!

Hi Kassie,

For the bst results after RT......Use the creams that have a high content of urea.

Good luck with the recovery

Thanks Gary. Indeed one needs to be careful with cosmetics and creams. I think that i used as well the wrong cream initially, one whcih contianed zinc oxide. It did not help and may have made it worse. It is difficult to read the small print on some of these jars and tubes ...so i got myself a magnifyng glass

Re: Radiation therapy in New Zealand and BIO

Hi Gazza , how time flies!

My radiotherapy on the node i had in my hand was successful, it disappeared. But about 2.5 years after the RT, a new a one appeared , just next to where the old one was. It was getting really bad, i and i was thinking about surgery, and started contacting specialists.

By pure chance i made what i thought was a discovery: Bio-Oil, here you can buy it in pharmacies and in supermarkets. Cheap...

I decided to try it the top on my hands to treat ageing symptoms, out of vanity :) I had one good rub a day, every morning, each hand rubbing the other.

About half a bottle of oil later, i started noticing changes. Ii was not sure at first but continued with the massage and the oiling. And gradually the tension disappeared, i was able to drive gripping wheel properly, and I can flatten my hand on the surface. I.e., all side effects and discomforts disappeared...the node itself became just a very small one, definitely much smaller that it was, almost unnoticeable.

I kept on doing this almost two years. Now i use it whenever I remember but at least once a week. And this keeps it at bay. I read later that actually it is one of the treatments already known, for me it was a personal discovery :) . For me it WORKED :) I am no longer even thinking about RT or surgery.

May be you can try it?

I have actually posted about this in the Other treatments , under a login name KayKay, there are a couple of other people confirming the effect. Search for herbal oil to find this thread. And good luck:)
