RT with Dr Shaffer

Hi
I have nodules only so far on both hands and am having RT with Dr Shaffer at the Royal Surrey County Hospital next week. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has had treatment from him and how effective it has been. I'm hopeful but apprehensive!

Re: RT with Dr Shaffer

No. I did have an appointment booked with him, and then cancelled, deciding to go to Hamburg instead. I didn't want to waste his time, so I never got to meet him.

Certainly he seems to have gone to some effort with his website.

Apart from cost, my concern with treatment in the UK was the risk of being undertreated. I'd had my hands and feet examined by a different UK radiation centre (not Mr Shaffer) and their view on my hands and feet turned out to be different to Prof S. I think being able to fully diagnose this disease requires a high level of skill and training to accurately analyse the full extent of the nodules and cords.

By co-incidence I was on the phone to Sue, his secretary, this morning asking if she had received an email I'd sent her last week about Prof Seegenschmiedt.

Prof Seegenschmiedt had mentioned an interest about communication with specialists between his practice in Germany and the UK. The UK has max of 17 months experience with Dupuytrens Radiotherapy with NICE approval only in Nov 2010, the Germans have 25-30 years plus. There could be some benefit in some sort of partnerships.

My preference would have been to have treatment in the UK, but we all have to make our individual assessments of specialist experience and of course cost.

I'd be interested to hear about what the lead shield looked like/size and what the consultation process was etc when you have finished.

Re: RT with Dr Shaffer

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'll report back on progress. I liked Dr Shaffer - he seemed to know what he was about and I think he uses the same protocol as Dr S in Germany. Good luck with your treatment.

Re: RT with Dr Shaffer

A UK patient with Ledderhose has blogged about his treatment by Doctor Shaffer http://ledderhose.blogspot.co.uk/search?...p;by-date=false

Re: RT with Dr Shaffer

Hi,

I am said patient that SB is referring to and I had RT done on my Ledderhose, I have only had the first week done so far.

I am sorry to say that it is too early for me to say how things are going for me but he does use the same protocol as in Germany. Whilst I was there though I had a chat with a Dupuytren's patient who was coming back for their 2nd week of treatment and they said they they had already start to see a good improvement.

The staff there were all really nice and helpful and like you said I found that Dr Shaffer really seems to know his stuff, I go back for my second week on 16th July so if anyone has any questions they want me to ask him feel free.

If you want to know anything else just ask either here, message me or comment on the blog.

Gary

Also I worked out that because I live close enough to travel to Surrey every day it worked out cheaper for me to get it done in the UK than to travel to Germany and get it done.

Re: RT with Dr Shaffer

Hi again,

This is a great place for everyone to share frustration and information about these diseases. I have have contacted so many helpful people on here and lots have helped me by doing an interview for the blog which I really appreciate. Certainly there are many knowledgable people here who know a lot more about the disease than several of the specialists that I have visited (Dr Shaffer not being one of those). As I said if you have any questions then ask.

Re: RT with Dr Shaffer - Radiation Protocol / Concept

I've recently updated Wikipedia with the Seegenschmiedt Radiation Protocol (or what people refer to as the "German Protocol".)

It's a small jpeg with the title "Radiation Concept" in blue in the Radiation Therapy section.

This is the format that Prof Seegenschmiedt uses for both Dupuytrens and Ledderhose.

Gary and Gary please could you have a look at the Wikipedia page and let me know how it compares to what you have been emailed by Dr Shafer. If possible I'd like to update the page I've put together with this information.

Very good work, alcook !

That's exactly how I was treated on both my feet and one hand sofar. I think the 12 week gap is important as I have seen several posts quoting a 6 weeks gap, which Prof. Seegenschmiedt considers too short when I explicitly asked him about the time intervall between the sdifferent courses. He also didn't seem to be very amused about the 10 x 2Gy schedule within 2 weeks which is practiced in Germany but also in some sites in the USA; besides one older study there is little published evidence for that RT concept !

Again THX for the good work, Larry
