Should I start splinting my hand now?

Hello everyone:),

I was wondering if I should begin to splint my hand now that it is getting tight, especially the little pinky & thumb. The whole hand is getting very tight & harder to straighten outward. Would splinting it at night, or through the day too be good, or not?...Thanks to all who can help.

This is a link to a video of what my hand is like right now>>www.youtube.com/watch?v=67mHgMTYoS8&list=UUaVqn96PQ8MGufsRabnFfNQ

Re: Should I start splinting my hand now?

Hi Metzie; I'm the unhelpful one that chimes in from time to time. Your left hand looks pretty much like both my right and left hands. I also have LD in both feet and have had for 45 years. My view is that splinting won't help. I also think that protecting your hands won't help.

I have decided that I will ignore the issues and push through. I have now had surgery once on one foot (at total fail) and on one hand (a partial fail) and NA six times (good results 5 times and no benefit the 6th). It just keeps coming back.

My view is "Manage it don't baby it". Seems to matter what I do it does what it wants to do regardless of what you do. So:

1) I wear gloves in the gym to reduce the calluses that would otherwise build up on the DD lumps.
2) I have a double grip on my tennis racquet so that I don't get cramp in my hand.
3) I am careful picking up wine glasses as my fingers don't go out straight and I often knock them over.

That's it. Over the past 45 years I have been given splints 3-4 times and they have been a waste of time. I have also been told to to give up weight lifting and virtually all forms of exercise. The disease keeps coming but what a great disease. - its the one that doesn't kill you.

I have taken the alternative route. I do everything. Gym 6-7 times per week. Tennis 3 times per week. Gym boxing with my daughter when she asks etc etc. No splints, no special protection.

Re: Should I start splinting my hand now?

I like your attitude Seph. I too play tennis, but do wear a glove these days and probably for a few other things too such as DIY and gardening.

I did try 'preventative splinting' at one stage, so not post NA, Xiaflex or surgery, but felt it was just a waste of time, and really did not like the short term joint stiffness that results since I like flexible hands as I also try to play piano.

However someone has just reposted a pointer to a thread with video on an interesting talk by a Dr Meinel: http://www.dupuytren-online.info/Forum_E...o-0_1411.html#7 Splinting with silicon softening.

For me it's interesting, but no more than that really.
