Thickening of skin after RT,
Has anyone had the side effect of thickening of the skin after RT? I know this is supposed to be a possible side effect of radiation treatment in general, but I wonder if anyone had it occur for RT for DD. I'm hoping it's just a side effect, and not progession of the disease itself. Thanks. - Mark

Re: Thickening of skin after RT,
Not really. In winter, my palm which was radiated, turns almost white. This is just a layer of dead dry skin that has not rubbed off. A quick scrub and moistening with cream and it's gone. Maybe you just need to exfoliate?

Re: Thickening of skin after RT,
I have thickened skin after RT. My palms feel harder and denser which makes bending and flexing the hand uncomfortable and achy. The pads on the palms just below the finger joints also seem puffy which adds to the discomfort. It has been suggested on this forum that I have fibrosis of the irradiated tissue, which can be a side effect of RT. I am having massage therapy which I hope will help and which I hope also may stop or slow down the progression of my DD which unfortunately was not halted by RT.

Re: Thickening of skin after RT,
I can't tell that there has been any thickening of skin after my RT.

Re: Thickening of skin after RT,
No thickening of my skin in the treated area. I do have dry skin in the treated area. You can see the exact radiated area by the dry skin pattern. It is not that bad and a little skin lotion fixes it.

Re: Thickening of skin after RT,
Thanks for the responses. I was expecting the dry skin problem, and possibly have some of it, but it's very minor.
Aryan - Sorry that that the RT didn't work for you, but I appreciate knowing that someone else did get the side effect of fibrosis. I hope that's what occurred with me also, so I'll keep monitoring it. - Mark

Re: Thickening of skin after RT, Fibrosis ???

Sounds pretty strange to me, as "FIBROSIS" usually occurs 2 - 5 years after radiotherapy at dose levels which are beyond 50Gy; this side effect has never been described in the "modern literature" on RT of Dupuytren!
I wonder who has treated you and with which technique; depending on the RT technique you may have received a higher skin dose than usually necessary to address the palmar fascia level. So try to get more DETAILS about your RT !
Best regards, Larry

Re: Thickening of skin after RT,
I will try and find out from my doctor what the dosage of my RT was. I think it was the same as Prof S in Germany and each hand was 'under' for about 3 and a half mins each day for 5 days and then again after a break of 8 weeks. Does that sound the norm?
The aching and stiffness continues and also new nodules are growing really quickly. I have been doing stretching exersizes which maybe is wrong for me - who knows?! I have hopes that massage therapy will help alleviate the aches and pains and also slow down the DD.

Re: Thickening of skin after RT,
Of course it differs depending on what type of machine and filter that was used, but my session took about 45 seconds each day.
