I Started Radiation Today at OU

Well, I'm in OK. Met with Dr. Herman today for a consult. My experience today is pretty much the same as Drumhead described. He examined my foot, told me basically that it didn't seem to be too advanced, set me up with an appt. I went to Radiology and they made the plate for my foot immediately after the consult. I went back in the late afternoon and got my first dose.

My foot now feels weird. It got really red when by the time I got back to the hotel room but now it is not quite as red (but still red). It is tingling up to my ankle, just feels different, minor throbbing. It doesn't hurt. The whole process took about 10 minutes. Very fast.

That's about it. Hope it works.

Oh, and a very funny thing (at least to me) happened in the car on the way to get my first dose. I found myself singing to an 80's song I hadn't heard in years. The name of the song? Radioactive by the Firm. "Don't stand too close, I'm a radioactive, radioactive"!! How ironic. I laughed out loud!

Re: I Started Radiation Today at OU

What is the dose concept you are going to receive ? Are they using photons or electrons ?

Hi Everyone!

MolotoW, I was told I am getting 300 centigrades per day. They use electrons. They said a total of 5 fractions at 300 = 1500 total when treatment is complete.

Today I had 2 treatments. My foot is hot and red right now. Feels like sunburn but no big deal.

Everything went fine. totally painless. all you hear is a beeping sound when it's happening. They have me lie face down on a table. Can't help but have an urge to pull my foot away from the machine but that would defeat the purpose.

Hello

Did your insurance cover the expense or did you have to pay out of pocket?

Hi,

I am pleased with the results and DO NOT GET SURGERY! I did and regret it. I had another nodule pop up almost immediately after surgery and the scar tissue is huge and painful.

The radiation seemed to do what it was supposed to do! That nodule is now shrunk to where I can barely feel it. i would see the people at OU again in a minute. Very professional and I am pleased with the results. I wish you the best in whatever you decide!!

Best to you!

Re: I Started Radiation Today at OU

Hi

I would like to let you know of my expereience of RT in the UK.

I went to Dr Glees in Wimbledon in March 2011 and had five RT sessions on each foot and on one hand. the nodules on the feet were tiny but I had advanced Dupreytens in the hand.
There was no improvement in the hand but the nodules in the feet shrunk within 3 months and were less painful. Unfortunately the improvement has not lasted and the nodules have begun to grow again. I am told that I can have further treatment but it is expensive (£1,500 per foot) and I am concerned about the long term effects of RT.

I think there is hope on the horizon for us Ledderhosen sufferers. I have had my bent fingers straightened using Xiapex injected into the cords. this has been very successful. the procedure is designed to treat cords not nodules and as far as I am aware it has not been approved for Ledderhosen anywhere in the world. The nodules in my hand have shrunk dramatically even though they were not injected directly and this points to Xiapex being an effective treatment for Ledderhosen nodules.

Fingers crossed that someone somewhere pushes to get this new treatment approved for our foot condition.

best wishes

JHB

Re: I Started Radiation Today at OU

The radiation treatment that I received at OU Medical Center was PROTON THERAPY, which is the typical method utilized in the United States. In Europe, they most often utilize X-RAY THERAPY, as this technology is more prevalent. To find out more about PROTON THERAPY and why it is thought to be more effective for treating CANCER (as well as Dupuytren's Contracture) please go to...............

www.proton-therapy.org

I am still continuing to see improvements and I'm still very thrilled!! The Ledderhose on my feet is gone........I have to really feel around to see where it once was. My hands are almost back to looking normal again. The nodules are still there, but are much much smaller than they were before. I was told it would take from 6 weeks to a year to see any difference and I had this done the first week in November.

Best of luck to you......

The clinic in Hamburg Germany used electron beam, not x-rays, last year when I had my hand done.
