International Driving Permit in German?

Another question for you all...Everything I find online says you do NOT need an International Driving Permit in Germany or Holland. I called the AAA just to make sure and they say you do need one. I'm a little distrustful because they are the ones issuing them at $15 each. Does anybody know for sure?

If it was me and I'm spending so much money to go abroad... I would spend $15 more and have it "just in case". You could contact the Germany Consulate or check their website ??

Re: International Driving Permit in German?

A driver's license with a photo and registered ID is usually accepted by the German police. but its the car rental agencies which sometimes require an international Driver's License. However for 15 bucks I would try to get it from AAA.

Be careful anywa, because Germans drive fast especially on the highways (AUTOBAHN !), Larry

Hi I have been travelling to Germany since the 70's. You need to take your current driver's licence issued in your home state which has a photo. In my experience most Germans now speak English. The only reason for the International Permit is that it converts your licence to a foreign language. My wife was stopped last summer in Barvaria -no problem. You will be fine.

USA Citizen chiming in. We've driven all over Europe, and never needed an international driver's license. Never even heard of one, until now.

Happy Travels,
Beth

Re: International Driving Permit in German?

Hi Australia Calling
Should you hire a car in Germany there is a 750 euro which you have to pay in an event of each accident.(Non Refundable over and above the normal comprehensive Insurance) Our travel insurance covers up to $4000 which you have to claim on return. You might look at "Sixth" where you can pay a small daily premium to remove the excess. You should look on line and pre book it is cheaper and the car is available on arrival. You can select to drop off at another location. Look on Yahoo!Deutschland. They will only accept a credit card. Regards.

Re: International Driving Permit in German?

newman's suggestion is correct !

Pay a little more and You have a Full Coverage in cas of an accident ! I t may cost you 10 USD per day.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip to Germany and good experiences with your doctor there. I was satisfid with Prof. Seegenschmiedt and I hope you will be as well ...
