My 7 year old has trauma related Plantar fibromatosis - help desperately needed

Hi - i haven't posted on here for a good year regarding my daughter who has a trauma related platar fibromatosis on the sole of her left foot.

Very briefly she caught her foot on a carpet gripper rod when 18 months old and following surgery it was confirmed it was a planter fibromatosis. We have monitored it continually and were over the moon when she was signed off 14 months ago

Things have been ok for the last 14 months but she has started to experience alot of pain when walking on it plus it has grown and the scar line (from previous surgery) has become very thickened.

We have been to see her consultant today and he has now reccommended that she is reffered to a plastic surgeon with the view that he does a partial faschia resection to remove it. he has been very hesitant to do anything because of the very high chance of regrowth.

Can anyone give me any advice. It is becoming heart wrenching to see my beautiful little girl hobbling around but we are so fearful of surgery making things even worse.

Thank you in advance

Zoe

Thats tough,

First question: is there DD or LD in the family? Secondly, I would find an expert on Pediatric Podiatry, I know that in Adults, large plantar fibromas can be radiated or injected with Steroids. Maybe you should contact Dr S. in Germany or Dr Wiess at VCU, see the RT clinics listed. To bad there is not a genetic test to test for DD.
I would be careful about more surgery, get several opinions.

Best,

Hi there Zoe
It's your decision and you need to be satisfied that you are completely informed before making it, so see as many different specialists from different perspectives as possible!

Re RT - I am assuming you are in the US - there are some radiation oncologists in the States that members on this website have have spoken highly about. Also, Prof Seegenschmiedt's (Germany) whole body of research into LD and DD started with a 7 year old child that had a severe case of LD. So RT for children is not completely out of the question, despite the increased risks associated with the chance of developing a secondary cancer. It might be a good idea to correspond with the Prof about the potential risks while you are considering all your options.

Good luck and keep in touch to let us know how it all goes

All the best
Di

Hi thank you to both of you for your replies.

http://www.dupuytren-online.info/Forum_E...tosis-1_24.html

Here is the link to my former post which explains's Ellen's full story. Unfortunately there is ledderhose and dupuytrens in both sides of our family - which obviously is not good news.

We are in the Uk and Ellens consultant has been really good so far but has said that to operate now on her feet is not within his skill which is why he has reccommended us to a plastic surgeon. Interestingly he hasn't reffered us to his immediate plastic surgeon he has decided that another guy he uses occasionally for my tricky things is where we need to go.

Do either of you know how i would go about contacting any of the Dr's mentioned?

Thank you again in advance

Zoe

Am going to stop off on the way home from work today to buy a tennis ball and start her rolling her feet on it can't see it will do any harm, i do massage it from time to time and she says it helps

Start by looking on this website under Treatment->Radiotherapy->Clinics

JUst one major recommendation for now: DON'T DO ANY SURGERY !!

It will HARM the Child more than it may help, the chance of RELAPSE Is almost 100% !

RELAPSES ARE MORE RAPID and MORE ADVANCED than the primary lesions ....

Hi Larry
i completely understand where you are coming from - and as a parent i feel i have an impossible situation to deal with - she has today had to stop doing gym as her foot is hurting and spent most of her lunch time sitting with her foot up because it is hurting as a mum i just want it all to stop and for her to get on with being a normal child again.

| am also finding it so frustrating that there is so little information out there - and from my research so far it seems Ellen is the only child with this as trauma related.

The more i read though a consultant is going to have to go a very long way to persuade my husband and i that it is the right thing to do to operate

Its not so rare : clinical series of 56 cases ...

Zoe,

Have they done an MRI or CT to determine the exact cause of the pain. Maybe you stated that and I missed it. I have done a great deal of work with post-operative scarring, as a therapist. Scar tissue can often be the culprit in causing nerve and/or soft tissue pain. You need to be sure that isn't the case here. If it is, you certainly want to avoid any further surgey.
There are painless therapies that can reduce scar tissue, but would be of no benefit in reducing LD. For instance, pulsed ultrasound; phonophoresis; iontophoresis; massage all reduce scar tissue.
Be sure your MD is certain of what he is dealing with, rather than assuming the pain is from the LD.
Praying for your Ellen to be pain free.

Beth
