Radiation in Washington State, Dr. Muff

I have had Ledderhose on both of my feet, Duputrens on my left hand, and Garrods pads on 4 knuckles for at least 1 1/2 years, probably longer. I am 46 years old and a male. I just found out what it was a month ago. Over the last year my doctor told me the nodules on my feet were caused by my running, and that it was scar tissue from injuries (I've never had an injury on my feet). I have ran over 130 marathons and ultra marathons, this sounded reasonable to me until I found out it is "Genetic" and not at all caused by my favorite actvity.
I figured out what it was by surfing online and looking at pictures on this website. Thanks, Thanks Thanks!!!
Luckly one of my best friends is a doctor. I told him what I thought it was, and sent him to your website. He has seen Duputrens patients before but always recommended surgery or NA. Since my Duputrens is at the beginning stages with no contracture I asked him to try to find a Radiologist who will Radiate my hand and feet. His friend Dr. Muff in Sedro-Wolley Wa, agreed to take me on. I was his 1st Duptrens patent in his 28 years in practice. I just finished with the 5 treatments on my hand yesterday. Hopefully the nodules and cords that are just starting to grow will recess.
I plan on getting my feet done at the end of September.
My question is what kind of side affects should I expect with the Ledderhose radiation? So far I haven't had any with the Duputrens Radiation. Should I stop running during the week of radiation?
Thanks Terry Sentinella

I had radiation for my Dupuytrens and Ledderhose at the same time, last November. Dr. Tripuraneni of Scripps Hospital in LaJolla, CA did ten treatments, five treatments a week, for two consecutive weeks. I had no side effect whatsoever both in my left hand and left foot. I expected dryness, but never had a problem.

The nodules on my left hand and left foot have become softer and smaller, there even was a very small, thin cord running along the index finger that seems to have dissapeared, the hand doesn't feel as tight as it did before the treatment and the constant itching and burning I had both in hand and foot have stopped. . I feel that the radiation has stopped, for now, the progression of the disease.

The most knowlegable person to contact about Ledderhose and Dupuytren is Prof. Seegenschmiedt, now active in Hamburg (Germany) http://www.info@szhh.info , who has treated over 100 Ledderhose patients and more than 600 Dupuytren's patients.
As far as I know he is also a Marathon runner, at least you can find results from him in the internet , e.g. http://statistik.d-u-v.org/getresultperson.php?runner=3678 or As Number 1948 in the New York City Marathon: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/03/sports...her-nature.html

I personally would keep going with running as long as possible ! Wish you the best ! And contact Prof. Seegenschmiedt,
he is really a very nice and well known person ...

Luba, do you know the type and intensity of the RT used on your LD? If a person knew that information, they could have the RT done in Dallas, TX just as easily as La Jolle, CA.

Thanks

Sentinella, keep us posted on your RT for LD, and good luck.

Dr. Tripuraneni at Scripps Hospital in LaJolla, CA uses electron beams. Five treatments per week, Monday through Friday, two weeks in a row for a total of 10 treatments. My treatments were 3 GYs each for a total of 30 GYs. I don't know if that is the standard he uses for all his patients or whether he adjusts the amount based on the extent of the disease in each patient.

I had RT on both my left hand and left foot at the same time. I am sure, your doctor in Dallas could get in touch with Dr. Tripuraneni for more details.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Re: Radiation in Washington State, Dr. Muff

Thanks for the info!

It has been a few weeks since my radiation. The achey and tingley feeling I had in my hand before the radiation is gone. Prior to the radiation my index finger would start to contract a little every morning and a few times during the day. I spent most of the day stretching it out trying to keep my finger straight. That has almost subsided, I only need to stretch it once a day now. I have high hopes the first round of radiation helped, we will see in the months to come. As far as the nodule shrinking, I don't think so. The nodule does seem to be softer and the cord seems to have shrunk a bit. Of course time will tell and hopefully the second round of radiation will attack the Duputrens even more. Absolutly no side affects.

I am not sure what type of machine they used. Dr. Muff got all the information for the treatment from this website. He showed me what he was going to do prior to the treatment, the info he gave me came from this website. So I would suggest if you find a Radiologist have them contact Dr. Klein. He was very good about getting back to me. I sent pictures of my feet and hand to Dr. Klein. He called me the same day and gave me suggestions on treatment.

I am excited to get my feet done now!

Thanks for responding.

Re: Radiation in Washington State, Dr. Muff

So glad you are happy with the initial results... When I had RT on my left hand and left foot, the improvement continued for a few months after I began...the nodules continued to shrink and get softer...Ten months after treatment the progression of the disease has stopped. No more itching and I can definitely open my hand much wider... Hope your results are long lasting !
