RT at OU for another time

I was supposed to drive up to OK today for a meeting tomorrow w/ Dr. Herman. My foot is recovering from surgery and they told me the wound had to close up before I could have RT. It did, about 2 weeks ago, but I stopped wearing my special shoe and starting wearing my Uggs and a big line appeared in the middle of my wound and when I looked at this morning it had opened up and was bleeding a bit at the corner.

Sinking feeling as I pretty much knew RT would have to be postponed. I called up there and spoke w/ Dr. Matthiesen (sp?). He was very nice and helpful and told me if there was any doubt to reschedule. As well, there is supposed to be a big weather event (ice/snow/freezing temps on Tuesday so the clinic may shut down anyway). So, I will wait and reschedule when the foot heals up a bit.

Disappointing as I just want to put this behind me... Guess I just wait a bit longer. Impressed with the kindness and professionalism of the OU staff.

Bleu, good thing you are waiting. Major winter storm comming, Ice first then sleet then 8 to 12" of snow. Worth the wait and they are fantastic. Have you been here to Oklahoma City before?

Re: RT at OU for another time

Hi Sooner,

How are you holding up? We haven't had school for the 3rd day in a row (Dallas area). Streets are still icy. I am so glad we did not come up! They said the clinic would probably shut down anyway.

I have not been to OK City. Driven by it on the way to KS (husband's family there). I have rescheduled for the week of Feb. 14th.

Any recommendations on fun things to do and see while I am there?

Hang in there! Warmer weather coming soon :)

Re: RT at OU for another time

I would be interested to learn which treatment schedule they use, since the issue of SINGLE and TOTAL DOSE for radiotherapy is discussed in other threads of this forum ... Larry

Still waiting on the warmer weather!!! today is Friday and we are expecting snow today and next week, then it warms up. On one of the other posts someone recommended a hotel, not sure which one, I will try to find out. It is near bricktown/downtown area not far from the OU medical complex and offers a medical discount. Bricktown offers a large variety of resturants. The Cowboy hall of fame is just north of downtown it is very interesting. There are several casinos around the city, there is one at the racetrack not far from the hall of fame, one (my favorite) Riverwind on I-35 at Norman you will see it as you drive up and one big one east of town in Shawnee on I-40. There is the Paseo Arts District and the OKC museum of Art. You might look up the Ford center and the performing arts center and see if there is anything playing at the time you are here. If you don't mind a short drive, Guthrie, north on I 35 is full of antique stores and historic homes or if you have a early RT you can go on up I-44 to Tulsa, about and hour and a holf drive. They have a couple of fantastic museums there, Gilcrease and Philbrook, which is in a old Oil Barrons Mansion . There is Quail Springs Mall, north of town and Penn Square Mall

I would be interested in this also. I'm trying to decide between Germany and Oklahoma. La Jolla seems to be treating with a lower dose in 10 treatments and I've read that some have had reoccurrence within a year. Does anybody know how similar Oklahoma's treatment is to Hamburg's (which seems to be the most experienced and has excellent results)?

Thanks...Diane

Here are the details of the RT (I don't understand medical jargon, so I'll just give you what they gave me. When i get treated it is as follows:

12 MEV
300cGy per foot per treatment
7 treatments
0.5 cm bolus on skin

This is from Drumheads posts, don't know if this is what you are looking for, Check out his posts, he was at OU the week before I went and seems to be more up on the technical aspect of what they are doing.

The Importance of the Correct RT Schedule .... !

For all those interested in RT SCHEDULES:

The OU-Concept : 7 x 3GY within 7 days is a big shot and its not the German protocol !

The La Jolla Concept : 10 x 2Gy within 12 days is a relatively lower shot but not the German protocol !

What I really dislike with these US protocols is that there have no published outcome data at all !

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The German Protocol proposed by the "PROF" was performed and evaluated for long-term outcome;
it uses two RT series of 5 x 3 Gy = 15 Gy within one week (5 - 7 days) separated by a break of 3 months !

The 7 x 3 Gy concept was applied within 2 weeks (14 days), but was used only for Dupuytren Disease ...

With these radiotherapy concepts good and long-term outcome have been documented and published!

Another German Protocol was similarly performed by Heyd et al. used an even higher single dose of 4Gy
applied up to a total dose of 24 - 32 Gy

I think after all these years of experience the German radiation therapists know quite well what is effective amd what is not ...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Literature : Studies from Essen, Hamburg, Offenbach / Frankfurt and Erlangen all with higher single doses of 3Gy

For all those interested in RT SCHEDULES:

Thank you Larry - you are helping me make my decision and I'm leaning very much toward Germany. Appreciate you taking the time to post this information.
