Elevated Sed Rate and C Reactive Protein
Just wondering if any of the rest of you have elevated inflammation markers in your lab work?

Beth, I have DD but was also recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis; I have elevated inflammation markers.

tam1,
I will be seeing a rheumatologist, soon. I have arthritis, previously unspecified.
I was just wondering if people with strictly DD, LD had elevated sed rate/CRP. Just curiosity. It seems like it should be that way, in the proliferative phase.
I hope your RA is under control. How do you manage with both those?

My DD is confined so far to cords in the palms of both hands; the condition appeared after I tore TFCC ligaments in both wrists in mid-2009. In October of 2010 I developed synovitis in my MCP joints, and I saw a rheumatologist, who diagnosed me with "atypical rheumatoid arthritis." So far it's only in my hands, with most of the problem in the MCPs. The DD has led to some "cupping," tightness and pain in the palms. My MCP joints are stiff and enlarged because of the RA. I'm trying medication with my rheumatologist, but I don't know how that will ultimately turn out. I miss the full function of my hands!
When I first developed DD, my primary care doctor ordered blood work to check for RA, as I had some MCP swelling and tenosynovitis in my fingers. My sed rate at the time was normal, even with the inflammation I had from the ligament tears and trigger fingers. My rheumatoid factor was negative then, too.

Mine have been elevated for the last few years and my doc is clueless as to why. Strange that recently my test came up normal, but my DD is in a flair up right now. I would have thought I would have a high C.R.P. WHILE having a flair up, otherwise I was sure of a correlation and still think there is some connection....

Beth,
Best wishes to you, too, as you deal with the two diseases. Your knowledge as a hand therapist will surely be helpful as you care for your hands and cope with pain. I think it's often tricky to determine which of the two conditions is causing a particular pain, and I doubt that my rheumatologist has a solid understanding of the discomfort that DD can create; he tends to attribute everything to the RA. I had plenty of issues with my palms before I showed clear RA symptoms, and as the tightening of the fascia and the growth of cords increased over time, I definitely felt pain and limitations I hadn't known before.
