Re: Decision making - need input

Hi Luba,

The RT that I had done on my right hand certainly helped. It stopped the progression, but the existing cords did not go away. It's been 2 years and there is not much going on, but there is cupping in my palm and creeping up into my little finger. I know that finger is more susceptible so I want to get NA, or maybe a combination of NA and Xiaflex if Dr. Denkler recommends it, while there is still very little contracture. I want to stay ahead of Dups and nip it right where it is.

When I was first hit with DD, I did not know which to do first, RT or NA. There wasn't as much about RT 2+ years ago as there is now. I did NA first but could not schedule RT for about 4 months. You never know for sure, but maybe it would have been better to have RT first, but Dr. T said that it was best to have NA first so that my hand would lie flat. I think that is probably true, but on the other hand (no pun intended), if I could have scheduled RT right away, it would have been better in attacking the active DD. BUT, during that wait, nodules developed all over my palm and indicated more clearly how widespread the active DD was so RT was done on my whole palm and all metacarpal joints. Like I said, you never know for sure.

Maybe my reconsidering a different order or timing may help someone trying to decide what to do.

Re: Decision making - need input

Carol,

I had a nodule that quickly developed into a cord leading from my middle finger to my wrist. I had RT and the nodule disappeared and the cord recessed somewhat into my palm. The cord is smaller, the tightness and the pulling is all gone. The pain is gone and over the last year I have regained most of my strength back into that hand. I did not expect to have the cord regress and was very lucky that it occured. I hope this answers your question. I don't know if my reaction to the RT is typical or not, I am just fortunate that it worked.

Re: Decision making - need input

Saw the Kaiser MD...hand surgeon. She was not even
interested in learning about RT nor any other proceedures. Next week I will be in Bozeman, Montana talking to a Hand Specialist AND a radiation doc who has treated for DD. It's quite a bit MORE than a couple of thousand $$$ more like 11,000 and I have airfare on top of it. California is more expensive.

Can you post more information about the 7x7 treatment at 3gy? Does anyone have any good sites or papers discussing the efficacy of RT. I am having to educate the doctors here...

TIA,
Carol

Re: Decision making - need input

Go to Missouri and get your RT for little over $4000. I can't believe the prices these doctors are charging. My doctor is very good and reasonable in price.

Re: Decision making - need input

Cindy,

There is no clinic/radiologist in Missouri on the RT treatment list on this site. Sounds like it is the most reasonable price that I've seen. I would very much like to have it in case I need RT again and Medicare isn't paying. I'm sure others would like to have the info, too.

It would be nice to get it posted on the clinic list here, but please send me doctor's name, location and contact information.

Thanks,

Flora

I haven't been on the forum for a bit and haven't been following things. Where are you located? There is a surgeon at Kaiser in Marin County (I think it is San Rafael) that does NA-- she was trained by Dr. Keith Denkler.

Re: Decision making - need input

I will get all my info on the cost of my hands and let everyone know what his cost was before ins. paid and what my costs was after ins paid. I hope that will help everyone. And will put doctor name and info on here also. How do you put the doctors info in the clinic area? I was looking but couldn't figure it out. But i will put up all the info for everyone. He is a great doctor and i would never go anywhere else.

Re: Decision making - need input

I went for 10 days and each treatment lasted about 5 minutes each at the most. And i had 2 GY each day per each hand or 20GY for both hands in 10 days. My insurance was a $2000 deductable that i paid and then they paid the rest. I do know my bill was alot less than some of the quotes people on the forum talked about. My bill in total with all the office visits and radiation was $4100 give or take. Which means my ins. paid $2,100. If you have no ins. the charge would be $6,100. Here is his website so you can read and look over or call. Hope this helps.http://www.tridocs.com/sub-docs/cozad.html

They also have a building that is about a 3 minute walk from where you have RT. It is called Treehouse and it is for people coming in from out of town or out of state or out of the country that is having radiation done. The cost is $25 a night and i think you would be pleased.
